Chapter 6 - An Ally in the Shadows

The winter wind howling across the East River waterfront was sharp enough to slice through bone, but Julian stood motionless on the abandoned pier.
He checked his platinum chronometer; it was exactly 4:00 AM, the darkest, coldest hour of the morning before the city began to stir.
A dark, unmarked federal sedan pulled onto the gravel dock, its high beams cutting through the swirling snowfall before the engine died.
The driver’s door opened, and a woman in a heavy wool trench coat stepped out, her hand resting conspicuously on her hip near her service weapon.
It was Assistant United States Attorney Elena Rostova, the head of the organized crime task force that had hunted Julian for five years.
“You have a lot of nerve calling my secure line, Moretti,” Elena said, her voice carrying across the icy water with professional hostility.
“My agents have had a warrant for your arrest sitting on my desk since the waterfront labor union indictments last Tuesday.”
“If you wanted to arrest me, Elena, you would have brought an FBI tactical team instead of coming alone,” Julian replied calmly, stepping out of the shadows.
He raised his hands slightly to show he was unarmed, though his body language remained as commanding as ever.
“You came alone because you know that if I go down tonight, the entire Eastern Seaboard plunges into a mob war that will kill hundreds of civilians.”
Elena stopped five feet away from him, her piercing blue eyes searching his face through the falling snow with intense curiosity.
“Our informants reported a car bomb in Miami six hours ago,” she said softly, her breath clouding in the freezing air. “We thought you were dead.”
“My wife and my chief counsel orchestrated that assassination attempt in collaboration with the Calabrese crime family,” Julian stated without inflection.
“They slaughtered my internal security team at the Bedford estate, and they are currently attempting to usurp control of my syndicate.”
Elena’s eyes widened slightly as the magnitude of the intelligence settled into her analytical, prosecutor’s mind.
“Why are you telling me this, Julian?” she asked cautiously. “You have never cooperated with federal law enforcement in your entire life.”
“Because I am going to cleanse my house tonight, and the street casualties are going to be severe,” Julian answered, stepping closer to her.
He reached into his overcoat, pulling out a waterproof encrypted flash drive and holding it out between them in the freezing night.
“This drive contains the complete offshore financial records, offshore accounts, and bribery ledgers of Damian Vance and the Calabrese leadership.”
He watched her eyes drop to the flash drive, knowing that the data inside would guarantee her appointment as the next Federal District Attorney.
“It gives you the political corruption cases you have wanted for a decade, including three sitting judges and two state senators who took Damian’s money.”
“And what is the price for this holy grail of evidence, Moretti?” Elena asked, her voice dropping into a tense, calculated register.
“I want a twenty-four-hour tactical blind eye from your federal surveillance teams across Westchester and the Brooklyn waterfront,” Julian demanded coldly.
“Do not dispatch your SWAT units, do not intercept my communications, and let me settle my family business without federal interference.”
Elena looked at the flash drive, then looked up into the freezing, relentless gray eyes of the most dangerous man in New York.
She slowly reached out her gloved hand, taking the drive from his fingers and slipping it securely into her heavy trench coat.

“The weather in New York is terrible today, Mr. Moretti,” Elena said, turning her back to him as she walked toward her sedan.
“My agents will be inside their offices doing paperwork until tomorrow morning; whatever happens in the snow is not my concern.”
