Chapter 14 - The Evidence is Laid Bare

Julian did not simply want the Commission’s passive neutrality; he wanted their active, documented condemnation of the traitors who had betrayed him.
He gestured toward Marcus, who stepped forward and plugged a high-definition projector into the restaurant vault’s multimedia display system.
The white wall of the basement illuminated with the crystal-clear, infrared video footage Julian had recorded inside the Bedford master bedroom.
The five bosses watched in silence as Rosalind’s face appeared on the screen, laughing about how easily she had manipulated Julian’s trust.
They listened to Damian Vance boasting about his clandestine alliances with the Calabrese family and his plans to murder loyal Moretti enforcers.
Don Carmine’s expression darkened into a mask of pure, traditionalist fury as he watched the sacred code of underworld brotherhood violated on screen.
“This is an abomination,” Carmine growled, his fist slamming down onto the mahogany table with enough force to rattle the silverware.
“A man who betrays his sworn boss and conspires with an enemy syndicate has no right to the protection of our laws!”
Julian walked over to the corrupt attorney who was cowering in the corner of the room, trembling with violent, uncontrollable dread.
He reached down, grabbing the lawyer by his expensive silk tie and dragging him effortlessly to his feet before the assembled patriarchs.
“Tell them who signed the authorization for the car bomb in Miami,” Julian commanded, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying menace.
“It was Damian!” the attorney screamed, tears of terror running down his pale cheeks as he looked at the cold eyes of the five bosses.
“Damian and Salvatore Vane’s daughter! They planned it for six months! They promised the Calabrese family forty percent of the port revenues!”
The confession hung in the air like poison, destroying any lingering doubt regarding the absolute legitimacy of Julian’s forthcoming vengeance.
Don Carmine stood up, reaching for a traditional silver chalice sitting on the sideboard and pouring a small measure of red wine into the glass.
He raised the glass toward Julian, a solemn, ancient gesture of underworld sanction that had been used by their ancestors in Sicily for centuries.
“By the laws of our fathers, Julian Moretti,” Carmine proclaimed solemnly, “Damian Vance and his conspirators are condemned as traditori.”
“Their blood is forfeit, their names are erased from our history, and no man in this city shall offer them shelter, water, or mercy.”
Julian took the glass of wine from the old Don’s hand, drinking the contents in a single, silent draft to seal the covenant of death.
He set the empty crystal chalice back onto the mahogany table, turning his back on the Commission without uttering another unnecessary word.
He had secured the political stability of his underworld empire; now it was time to return to the snowy hills of Westchester to execute the sentence.
As he walked out through the basement doors into the freezing New York night, his phone vibrated with a tactical alert from Dante.
We are inside the utility tunnels beneath the Bedford mansion, boss, the text read. The targets are isolated on the second floor; awaiting your command.

Julian typed a two-word response that sealed the fate of the woman he had loved and the brother he had trusted:
Go dark.
