Chapter 1 - The Eavesdropping

The air inside the silver closet was thick with the scent of metal, dust, and Maria’s sheer terror.
Julian stood frozen in the dark, his hand resting on the grip of his Sig Sauer while his heart hammered against his ribs.
Through the narrow crack in the doorframe, he watched his wife and his second-in-command stand under the chandelier of the main hall.
Rosalind wore the ruby necklace Julian had purchased for her in Geneva just three months ago.
She looked breathtakingly calm, her delicate fingers tracing the edge of a mahogany side table with casual elegance.
Damian stood two feet away, holding an encrypted tablet that glowed faintly against the dim evening light of the corridor.
“The Swiss accounts require his dual-authentication token,” Damian said, his voice stripped of the subservience he usually displayed around Julian.
“I already cloned his biometric key from the safe in the master bedroom,” Rosalind replied with a chilling smile that made Julian’s blood run cold.
“Once the Miami hit squad confirms the vehicle explosion, the syndicate’s European holdings will automatically transfer to our offshore shells in Panama.”
Julian’s breath caught in his throat as the words pierced his mind like shards of broken ice.
A vehicle explosion in Miami.
He had changed his itinerary at the absolute last second, bypassing his regular armored transport to take a private rental directly to the airfield.
If he had taken the standard route arranged by Damian, he would be a burning corpse on an interstate highway right now.
Maria’s hand trembled against Julian’s sleeve, her wide eyes pleading with him to remain completely silent.
“What about the staff?” Rosalind asked, her tone entirely devoid of human empathy as she looked toward the kitchen wing.
“The guards at the front gate have already been replaced by my personal contractors from the Calabrese crew,” Damian answered smoothly.
“By dawn, we will stage a break-in to explain the disappearance of the household servants who remain loyal to Julian.”
Julian looked down at the short, unassuming woman beside him who had risked her life to drag him into this dark corner.
Maria had not just saved him from an embarrassing scene; she had saved him from walking into an active execution chamber inside his own home.
He leaned down, his lips brushing the edge of Maria’s ear as he whispered with lethal precision.
“How many of my men are dead?”
“All of them, Mr. Moretti,” she breathed back, a single tear cutting a clean path down her dusty cheek.
“They killed your security detail in the basement an hour ago, and they are hunting for me right now.”
Julian felt the last remaining shreds of his humanity dissolve into the shadows of the cramped silver closet.
The man who had loved Rosalind died right there among the polished trays and fine china.
What remained was the cold, ruthless apex predator who had conquered the New York underworld by fire and blood.
He gently squeezed Maria’s shoulder, silently signaling that the time for hiding was rapidly coming to an end.

He would let them execute their fraudulent transfers, and he would let them celebrate their temporary victory.
When the sun rose over the snow-covered trees of Westchester, Julian Moretti would teach his betrayers the true definition of hell.
