Chapter 5 - The First Strike

Inside the master bedroom of the Bedford estate, Damian Vance was typing furiously on his tablet, his eyes fixed on the Swiss account balances.
Suddenly, the screen flashed with a brilliant, blinding red notification banner that read: SECURITY OVERRIDE — ASSETS FROZEN BY SOVEREIGN ORDER.
Damian shot to his feet, spilling the glass of fifty-year-old scotch across the pristine Persian rug Julian had imported from Istanbul.
“What happened?!” Rosalind screamed, scrambling off the bed and clutching her silk robe closed as she stared at the flashing tablet.
“The transfers were rejected by the Zurich clearing house!” Damian roared, his calm, professional veneer shattering into absolute panic.
“Someone just initiated a global freeze on every shell company, offshore holding, and phantom account associated with the Moretti syndicate!”
He frantically tapped the screen, trying to reroute the remaining liquidity through their secondary channels in the Cayman Islands.
Every single attempt was met with the exact same automated denial message: ACCESS DENIED — BIOMETRIC SIGNATURE REQUIRED.
“That is impossible!” Rosalind gasped, her face draining of color as she grabbed Damian by the shoulders of his shirt.
“You told me the biometric tokens were cloned! You told me we had full administrative control over the European assets!”
“We did!” Damian shouted back, his chest heaving as he stared at the red letters draining his dreams of empire into nothingness.
“There is only one person on the face of this earth who possesses the master sovereign override code for those specific private vaults!”
The room fell into a terrifying, suffocating silence as the horrific realization began to dawn upon the two conspirators.
“No,” Rosalind whispered, shaking her head as her entire body began to tremble with sudden, paralyzing dread. “No, the Miami team said the car exploded.”
“The car exploded, but Julian wasn't inside it!” Damian snarled, drawing his weapon from his holster and backing toward the bedroom door.
“He is alive, Rosalind! He is alive, he knows what we did, and he is locking us out of the system before he comes for our throats!”
Down in the Astoria safehouse, Julian watched the absolute panic erupt on his laptop screen with cold, detached satisfaction.
He pressed a single key on his console, sending an automated, untraceable text message directly to Damian’s personal cell phone.
In the Bedford bedroom, Damian’s phone vibrated violently against the wood of the nightstand, making both of them jump in terror.
Damian slowly walked over to the table, picking up the device with shaking hands as Rosalind leaned over his shoulder to read the screen.
The message contained only five simple words, but they carried the weight of an execution order signed in blood:
I hope you enjoyed the scotch.
Rosalind let out a piercing scream of pure terror, stumbling backward until she hit the wall of the bedroom, her eyes wide with madness.
“He was here!” she shrieked, pointing toward the empty hallway beyond the open bedroom door. “He was inside the house tonight, Damian!”
Damian didn't answer her; he began screaming orders into his tactical radio, commanding his Calabrese mercenaries to lock down the entire perimeter.

They were trapped inside a gilded cage of their own making, surrounded by the ghosts of the men they had murdered.
And outside in the freezing New York blizzard, the rightful king of the underworld was gathering his army for the slaughter.
