Chapter 16 - Infiltration

The interior of the Bedford mansion was an absolute void of darkness, broken only by the intermittent, distant howling of the wind outside.

Julian navigated the labyrinth of ground-floor rooms without a flashlight, his eyes fully adapted to the gloom of the home he had designed.

He moved through the grand dining room, his hand lightly grazing the edge of the long mahogany table where he had hosted Damian for Thanksgiving.

He passed the conservatory, where Rosalind used to sit reading art books while he worked on his financial ledgers in the adjacent study.

Every corner of the house was saturated with memories of a life that had been entirely fabricated from lies, deception, and poisoned affection.

He reached the base of the grand spiral staircase, pausing with his hand on the polished oak banister to listen to the sounds above.

From the second-floor landing, he could hear the ragged, panicked breathing of Damian Vance, accompanied by the frantic clicking of a pistol slide.

“Rosalind! Hold the flashlight steady!” Damian hissed in the darkness, his voice trembling with a chaotic, unhinged terror that echoed down the stairwell.

“I can't see anything! The batteries are dying!” Rosalind sobbed back, her voice cracked and raw from hours of screaming at the locked shutters.

Julian began his ascent, his footsteps entirely silent against the thick, imported Persian carpet runner that covered the marble stairs.

He reached the second-floor landing, pressing his back against the decorative plaster pillar that marked the entrance to the main portrait gallery.

Ten feet away, the weak, yellow beam of Rosalind’s failing flashlight danced erratically across the oil paintings hanging on the gallery walls.

Damian stood with his back to the pillar, aiming his heavy automatic pistol blindly down the hallway toward the master bedroom suite.

“He’s not here,” Damian muttered to himself, his breath coming in rapid, hyperventilating gasps as he wiped sweat from his eyes.

“The perimeter guards must have triggered an automated lockdown! We just need to find the manual manual manual release lever in the utility panel!”

Julian stepped out from behind the pillar, his tall, dark silhouette blending seamlessly into the absolute darkness of the gallery hallway.

He raised his suppressed weapon, aiming directly at the crystal chandelier hanging from the vaulted ceiling ten feet above Damian’s head.

He pulled the trigger twice in rapid succession—thwip... thwip!

The heavy brass chain supporting the chandelier snapped instantly under the impact of the high-velocity tactical rounds.

The massive, three-hundred-pound crystal fixture crashed down onto the gallery floor with a deafening, explosive shatter of flying glass and metal.

Rosalind screamed in absolute horror, dropping the flashlight onto the carpet as the shockwave of the crash threw her to her knees.

“Who’s firing?!” Damian roared, firing three blind, deafening shots down the empty hallway toward the shattered remains of the chandelier.

The muzzle flashes illuminated the gallery for a split second, casting wild, terrifying shadows across the walls of the mansion.

And in that brief, second-long flash of light, Damian saw Julian Moretti standing five feet away from him, cold as the winter snow.
