Chapter 11 - Protecting the Innocent

While Damian and Rosalind were stumbling through the dark corridors of Bedford, Maria sat in the Astoria safehouse watching her cell phone.
The screen illuminated with an incoming text message from an unrecognized number, causing her breath to catch painfully in her throat.
She opened the message, her blood turning to ice as she read the terrifying words sent by one of Damian’s remaining street contacts:
We know where your sister lives in the Bronx, housekeeper. Tell us where Moretti is hiding, or we burn her apartment building to the ground.
Maria let out a choked sob, dropping the phone onto the steel table as sheer panic threatened to overwhelm her senses.
Her older sister, Sofia, lived in a humble tenement building on Grand Concourse with three young children, completely innocent of the syndicate's wars.
Before Maria could dissolve into tears, the door to the command office opened, and Julian’s secondary lieutenant, a silent enforcer named Dante, stepped in.
“What happened, Maria?” Dante asked, his sharp eyes immediately registering the terror written across the housekeeper’s face.
Maria handed him the cellular device with trembling hands, unable to speak as tears streamed down her cheeks.
Dante read the text message, his jaw clenching with cold professional anger before he tapped his tactical radio communicator.
“Boss,” Dante spoke into the encrypted frequency, his voice cutting through the static directly to Julian’s earpiece in Westchester.
“Damian’s remnants are targeting Maria’s family in the Bronx to force a leak on your location; they have shooters en route to Grand Concourse.”
There was a three-second silence on the radio before Julian’s calm, authoritative voice responded from the snowy woods of Bedford.
“Dante, take two tactical units from the Astoria reserve and proceed to Grand Concourse immediately under emergency response protocols,” Julian commanded.
“Evacuate Maria’s sister and her children to the secure harbor facility, and execute any hostile operative within fifty yards of that building.”
“Copy that, boss,” Dante replied, cocking his primary weapon and gesturing for six heavily armed enforcers to follow him toward the vehicles.
He turned back to Maria before exiting the room, his expression softening with a rare display of genuine human reassurance.
“Your family is under the personal protection of Julian Moretti, Maria,” Dante said firmly. “No one touches blood that belongs to the house.”
Twenty minutes later, two black SUVs screech to a halt outside the crumbling brick tenement building on Grand Concourse in the freezing rain.
Four of Damian’s Calabrese mercenaries were currently kicking at the front door of Sofia’s ground-floor apartment with weapons drawn.
Before the mercenaries could breach the wood, Dante’s tactical unit converged on the hallway with military precision and blinding speed.
The firefight lasted less than ten seconds; the mercenaries were neutralized instantly without a single civilian casualty or stray bullet entering the apartment.
Dante knocked gently on the battered apartment door, speaking in fluent, reassuring Spanish to calm the terrified mother inside.
By the time the NYPD cruisers began responding to the distant gunfire reports, Sofia and her children were already safely inside the armored convoy.

Back in Astoria, Maria received a secure confirmation photograph showing her sister and nieces drinking hot chocolate inside the harbor safehouse.
She sank to her knees on the concrete floor, weeping tears of profound gratitude for the crime lord who never forgot a debt of loyalty.
