Chapter 9 - THE CONSEQUENCES

The fallout from the trial completely destroyed whatever was left of the Sterling family legacy.
My parents were formally indicted for felony witness tampering and criminal bribery.
Because of their old age and complete lack of prior criminal history, they avoided actual prison time.
However, the judge sentenced them to five years of strict house arrest and massive, crippling financial fines.
The legal fees completely drained their retirement accounts and forced them into sudden bankruptcy.
They had to sell their massive, luxurious mansion and move into a tiny, rundown apartment on the outskirts of the city.
All of their wealthy friends completely abandoned them.
They became total social pariahs, completely isolated in the prison of their own making.
I never spoke to them again.
I legally changed my last name and Lily's last name, completely severing all ties to the Sterling bloodline.
I used the massive settlement money from the hotel's liability insurance to buy a beautiful new house in a quiet, safe neighborhood.
I wanted Lily to grow up in an environment filled with absolute love, peace, and safety.
I spent my evenings reading her bedtime stories and helping her with her school projects.
Her physical scar had faded into a thin, barely noticeable white line hidden beneath her beautiful hair.
Her emotional scars were slowly healing, thanks to a wonderful child therapist and a lot of patience.
