Chapter 1 - THE ARREST

"Smile for the camera, Harrison."
My brother froze.
His arrogant smirk vanished in an instant.
He slowly turned his head toward the entrance of the ballroom.
The tiny red light on the dome camera was blinking steadily.
It had recorded every single second of his horrific performance.
The heavy ballroom doors suddenly burst open.
Four police officers and two paramedics rushed into the room.
The flashing red and blue lights from their cruisers illuminated the lobby outside.
The paramedics immediately ran toward me and knelt beside Lily.
They applied a thick gauze pad to the side of her bleeding head.
My little girl whimpered in pain, but she held onto my hand tightly.
"Who did this to the child?" the lead police officer demanded loudly.
Before I could even speak, my mother stepped forward with her perfectly practiced smile.
"Officer, it was just a terrible misunderstanding," she lied smoothly.
"The little girl tripped and fell into a wooden sign while she was running."
I looked at my mother with absolute disgust.
She was willing to let her granddaughter bleed just to protect her precious son.
"That is a lie," I said, my voice echoing clearly across the silent room.
"My brother struck her in the head with that heavy walnut frame."
Harrison immediately threw his hands up in a defensive gesture.
"She stole my Rolex, Officer!" he shouted, pointing a finger at us.
"I confronted her mother, and things just got a little out of hand."
The officer looked at the massive pool of blood on the floor and then at my brother's pristine tuxedo.
"You assaulted a seven-year-old over a watch?" the officer asked, his hand resting on his radio.
"I want to press full criminal charges," I stated firmly.
My father marched over, his face purple with absolute rage.
"Claire, you will do no such thing to this family," he hissed through clenched teeth.
"Officer, you need to go to the manager's office right now," I instructed, completely ignoring my father.
"Pull the security footage from camera four above the main doors."
Harrison's face turned the color of pale ash.
He suddenly realized that his thirty years of escaping consequences had just come to a violent end.
Two officers escorted the hotel manager out of the room to review the tapes.
Ten agonizing minutes later, they returned.
The lead officer didn't say a single word to my parents.
He walked directly up to the groom, pulled out a pair of heavy steel handcuffs, and grabbed Harrison's arms.

"Harrison Sterling, you are under arrest for aggravated assault on a minor."
The entire wedding reception erupted into sheer, unadulterated chaos.
