Chapter 6 - The Ice Thaws

For three days, the compound was locked down tightly. Maya spent most of her time in the sunroom, reading books to Clara, whose color was finally returning. The luxury of the estate was overwhelming—catered meals, silk robes, and a view of the crashing Atlantic Ocean that felt entirely surreal after eleven days in a lightless basement.
Late one evening, Maya wandered into the massive, glass-enclosed kitchen for a glass of water. The room was dark, save for the ambient light of the moon reflecting off the ocean.
She jumped when she saw Victor sitting at the marble island, a glass of bourbon in his hand. He had stripped off his suit jacket, his tie loosened, looking exhausted. The flawless, untouchable facade of the syndicate boss had cracked just a fraction.
“I didn't mean to intrude,” Maya said, taking a step back.
“You aren't,” Victor replied, gesturing to the empty stool beside him. “Sit.”
Maya hesitated, then poured herself a glass of water and sat down. The silence between them wasn't uncomfortable; it was heavy with unspoken words. She looked at his hands—strong, scarred, and resting perfectly still on the marble counter.
“Julian survived the harbor purge,” Victor said quietly, staring into his glass. “He slipped through the net again. He’s like a rat in the walls. But he’s running out of money and places to hide.”
“He’s dangerous when he’s desperate,” Maya warned, shivering at the memory of his cold smile.
Victor turned his head, looking at her with an intensity that made her breath catch. “I failed him. We had the same father, different mothers. When the old man died, I took over the empire and tried to protect Julian from the worst of the bloodshed. I gave him clean businesses. Real estate. I thought I was saving his soul.”

“You can’t save someone who doesn't want to be saved, Victor,” Maya said softly, surprising herself by using his first name. She reached out, her fingertips lightly brushing his scarred knuckle. “You are not responsible for the monster he chose to become.”
Victor looked down at her hand touching his, a profound, shifting emotion flashing in his dark eyes. For the first time in his life, the most dangerous man in Boston felt a spark of pure, undeniable warmth.
