Chapter 14 - The Blood Tie

The single gunshot echoed through the narrow alleyway, silencing Julian Sterling forever. He collapsed onto the wet pavement, his lifeless eyes staring up at the rain-soaked sky.
Victor lowered the gun, his face an impenetrable mask of stone. He had just executed his own brother, severing the final corrupted branch of the Sterling family tree. The syndicate was safe. His throne was secure. But as he turned around to face Maya, the empire he ruled suddenly felt entirely insignificant.
Maya was trembling, the adrenaline crash finally hitting her system. The reality of the violence, the absolute finality of death, was overwhelming.
Victor didn't say a word. He dropped the magazine from his weapon, cleared the chamber, and tossed the gun onto the passenger seat of the van. Then, he crossed the distance between them and pulled Maya firmly against his chest.
She gasped, burying her face into his soaked trench coat, her hands gripping his lapels as if he were the only solid thing left in the universe. Victor wrapped his arms around her, resting his chin on the top of her head. He stood there in the pouring rain, ignoring the sirens wailing in the distance, ignoring the clean-up crew Marcus was deploying upstairs.
“It’s over,” Victor murmured, his deep voice vibrating against her chest. “He is never going to haunt your nightmares again. I promise you.”
“You came for me,” Maya whispered, her tears mixing with the rain. “You abandoned the penthouse to find me.”
“I will always come for you,” Victor replied, the admission slipping out with an effortless, undeniable truth. For a man who lived his entire life in the shadows, guarding his emotions behind walls of steel and violence, this was the ultimate surrender.
Marcus stepped out of the fire exit, taking in the scene. He gave a sharp whistle, signaling the extraction team.

“Time to go, Boss,” Marcus called out respectfully. “The police are two minutes out.”
Victor gently pulled back, framing Maya’s face with his large, warm hands. He wiped a stray tear from her cheek with his thumb. “Let’s go home, Maya.”
