Chapter 1 - The Bargain

Maya stared at the impeccably dressed syndicate boss, the silence in the bedroom stretching into a suffocating tension. Victor Sterling was waiting for an answer, his dark eyes unblinking, betraying none of the ruthless violence she knew he was capable of. The flashback of Julian’s dead eyes in that hotel hallway still made her heart hammer wildly against her ribs. She had survived eleven days of torture by clinging to one single, desperate thought: Clara.
“I didn’t tell him,” Maya finally whispered, her voice cracking. “Julian broke my fingers. He starved me. But I didn’t tell him where the memory card was. Because if I did, I knew he wouldn’t just kill me. He would kill her.”
Victor leaned forward slightly, his posture shifting from a casual observer to a predator catching a scent. “Her. Who is her, Maya?”
“Clara Hughes,” Maya breathed, the name feeling like a prayer on her lips. “She’s an old woman in South Boston. She took me in when I had nothing. She has a bad heart, Mr. Sterling. The night I took that video, I knew Julian saw me. I managed to slip out the service elevator, and I mailed the SD card to Clara’s apartment hidden inside a birthday card. Then Julian’s men grabbed me in the alley.”
Victor’s jaw tightened. The tactical implications processed behind his eyes in a fraction of a second. “If Julian knows you mailed it, he will be tearing the city apart looking for anyone connected to you.”
“You have to save her,” Maya pleaded, pushing herself up against the silk pillows, ignoring the burning agony in her wrist. “I don’t care what happens to me. I don’t care about your syndicate or your brother. But Clara is innocent. I will give you the recording. I will give you the proof you need to execute Julian. Just please... get her out of there.”

Victor stood up slowly, his imposing figure casting a long shadow across the luxurious guest room. He didn't offer a gentle smile or a comforting pat on the shoulder. He operated in a world of absolute certainties.
“Marcus,” Victor said, tapping the communicator in his ear. “Assemble Strike Team Alpha. We have a target in South Boston. Clara Hughes. Bring her to the compound, unharmed. If Julian’s men are already there, leave no survivors.” He looked back down at Maya. “Your leverage is now under my protection. Rest.”
