Chapter 13 - The Return

“Don’t do it!”

Victor’s voice echoed down the alleyway like thunder. He burst through the fire exit, his weapon raised, breathing heavily. He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw the scene before him.

His brutal, treacherous brother was bleeding on the ground, completely at the mercy of the slender, resilient woman aiming a Glock at his heart.

Julian began to laugh—a wet, pathetic sound. “Look at this, Victor. The great syndicate boss, letting a peasant do his dirty work. Are you going to let her pull the trigger? The Council will tear you apart if a civilian executes a Sterling.”

Victor slowly lowered his weapon, walking steadily toward Maya. The rain plastered his dark hair to his forehead, but his eyes never left hers. He saw the tension in her shoulders, the raw, furious justice burning in her gaze.

“Maya,” Victor said softly, stopping right beside her. He didn't try to take the gun away. He respected her autonomy entirely. “If you pull that trigger, you cross a line you can never uncross. You become a part of my world forever. The blood doesn't wash off.”

Maya kept the gun leveled at Julian. She remembered the dark, the chains, the agonizing drip of the leaky pipe. She remembered Clara’s terror. She had every right to put a bullet in his skull.

But looking at Victor, she realized she didn't want to carry a ghost. She didn't want to be a killer. She wanted to be free.

Slowly, Maya exhaled a trembling breath and lowered the weapon. She engaged the safety and handed the gun to Victor.

“I’m not a monster,” Maya whispered, looking at Julian with absolute disgust. “I leave the garbage disposal to you.”

Julian’s arrogant smile faltered. He scrambled backward like a rat, realizing his psychological manipulation had completely failed.

Victor took the weapon, stepping smoothly in front of Maya, shielding her entirely. He looked down at his half-brother, his expression completely devoid of mercy.

“You broke the code, Julian,” Victor said coldly. “You targeted innocents. You turned against your own blood.”

“Victor, wait—”

Victor raised his weapon and fired.
