Chapter 2 - The Extraction

The rain began to fall in heavy, icy sheets over South Boston, washing the grit of the city into the gutters. Inside the compound, Maya paced the length of her bedroom like a caged animal. Dr. Aris had strictly ordered bed rest, but adrenaline and sheer terror kept her on her feet. Every tick of the antique grandfather clock in the hallway felt like a hammer striking an anvil.
What if they were too late? What if Julian had already found her?
Miles away, Marcus kicked the reinforced door of Clara’s walk-up apartment completely off its hinges.
The cramped, dimly lit living room was already a war zone. Two of Julian’s hired thugs were tearing through the upholstery, throwing books from the shelves, hunting for the memory card. Clara, frail but fiercely defiant, was backed into the kitchen corner, clutching a cast-iron skillet with trembling hands.
Marcus didn't announce his presence. He raised his suppressed tactical pistol and fired two precise shots. The sharp thwip-thwip echoed in the small space. Julian’s men dropped to the linoleum floor before they even realized they were under attack.
Clara let out a sharp gasp, dropping the skillet with a loud clatter. She clutched her chest, her breathing shallow and erratic.
“Clara Hughes?” Marcus asked, his deep voice surprisingly gentle as he holstered his weapon and stepped over the bodies. “I work for Victor Sterling. Maya Lin sent me.”
At the sound of Maya’s name, Clara’s knees buckled. Marcus caught her massive frame effortlessly. “Maya? Is my girl alive? They took her...”
“She is alive, and she is safe,” Marcus assured her, pulling a secure radio from his tactical vest. “But we need to move right now. Do you have a pink envelope? A birthday card?”
May you like
Clara nodded frantically, pointing a trembling finger toward a loose floorboard beneath the radiator. “She told me... she called me that night and told me to hide it. I didn't look inside.”
Marcus retrieved the envelope, feeling the hard square of the SD card hidden within the cardboard. He secured it in his breast pocket and gently guided Clara out of the apartment just as the distant wail of police sirens began to echo through the rainy streets. The extraction was flawless, but the war for Boston had officially begun.
