Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

Aleandro woke up in his own massive bed, the familiar scent of his estate surrounding him.
Sunlight poured through the heavy curtains.
A sharp, throbbing pain radiated from his heavily bandaged chest.
He turned his head and saw Isabella sleeping quietly in the chair beside his bed.
She looked exhausted, but the bruises on her face were slowly healing.
He reached out his right hand and gently touched her cheek.
She woke up instantly, gasping in surprise.
“You're awake,” she whispered, fresh tears filling her beautiful eyes.
“The doctor said the bullet cracked your collarbone and narrowly missed your main artery.”
“I thought I lost you.”
Aleandro squeezed her hand warmly.
“You are never going to lose me, Isabella.”
She buried her face in the blankets, crying softly.
“I should have told you about my sister.”
“I was just so terrified.”
“They sent me a video of her walking home from school.”
Aleandro stroked her dark hair affectionately.
“Your sister is safe now.”
“Marco moved her and your parents to a secure location in Italy.”
“The Lucchese family is completely dismantled.”
“Carmine suffered a fatal heart attack when he heard about Vincenzo.”
“The war is finally over.”
Isabella looked up, relief washing over her tired features.
She leaned forward and kissed him gently on the lips.
“I promise I will never keep another secret from you.”
Aleandro smiled softly.
