Chapter 9 - A New Normal

Weeks turned into quiet, peaceful months on the sprawling ranch.
The damaged barn was completely rebuilt, stronger and more beautiful than ever before.
Sheriff Miller made a full recovery and became a regular weekend visitor.
The cartel members were sentenced to federal prison, ensuring they would never harm anyone again.
But the most surprising change was the frequent visits from Lily and her parents.
They drove out to the countryside almost every other weekend.
Lily, who had finally started speaking again, was completely obsessed with Titan.
She would spend hours in the pasture, braiding bright ribbons into his long, dark mane.
The massive, terrifying beast that had crushed cars and men was incredibly gentle with her.
He would stand completely still, letting the tiny girl brush his legs and feed him treats.
Arthur loved watching them together from the porch, sipping his hot black coffee.
He realized that Titan had experienced something profoundly traumatic that night as well.
The stallion had taken on the heavy burden of being a guardian.
One chilly autumn afternoon, Lily’s father approached Arthur on the porch.
"We want to buy a small piece of land near here," he confessed with a warm smile.
"Lily says she wants to grow up and run a ranch, just like you."
Arthur chuckled, feeling a deep, comforting warmth spread through his chest.
He had never had children of his own.

But looking at the little girl laughing in the field, he finally felt like he had a true family.
"I think that's a wonderful idea," Arthur agreed wholeheartedly.
