Chapter 3 - Unwanted Visitors

The sheriff's cruiser kicked up a massive cloud of dust as it sped up the long gravel driveway.

Sheriff Miller stepped out, adjusting his heavy utility belt as he walked into the ranch house.

He took one look at the bruised, silent little girl eating a bowl of warm soup in the kitchen and sighed heavily.

"We have a major problem, Arthur," the sheriff said quietly, pulling the rancher into the hallway.

"An Amber Alert went out three states over yesterday evening."

"A little girl named Lily was abducted from a rest stop by a known cartel associate."

Arthur felt his stomach drop as the horrifying reality set in.

"They must have broken down or stopped near your property to hide out," Miller explained.

"She somehow managed to escape their vehicle in the dead of night and crawled into your barn to hide."

Before Arthur could respond, the deep, echoing sound of powerful engines filled the yard.

Three matte-black SUVs with heavily tinted windows rolled slowly onto the property.

They parked aggressively, completely blocking the sheriff's cruiser and the main exit.

Four men in tactical gear stepped out of the vehicles.

They didn't look like lost travelers.

They were heavily armed, and their eyes scanned the ranch with cold, predatory intent.

Sheriff Miller instantly unholstered his weapon, his face turning pale.

"Get the girl in the basement, Arthur," Miller ordered, his voice trembling slightly.

"Do it right now, and don't come up until I say so."

Arthur didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second.

He scooped Lily up and bolted toward the hidden cellar door beneath the staircase.

As he closed the heavy wooden trapdoor above them, he heard the chilling sound of heavy boots stepping onto his front porch.
