Chapter 8 - The Sanctuary

The Rostova Estate was located at the very summit of Sterling Ridge, hidden behind ten-foot stone walls and a perimeter of dense, evergreen pine forests. Unlike the showy, ostentatious mansions of the Vances, Julian’s home was a fortress of modern stone, glass, and dark timber—built to withstand a siege while blending seamlessly into the mountain landscape.

When the armored SUV pulled into the private courtyard, Clara was speechless. The property was massive, but quiet, patrolled by silent security guards who offered Julian crisp nods of respect as he opened her car door.

"The main house is here," Julian said, pointing to the sprawling three-story stone timber residence. He turned and pointed toward a charming, two-bedroom stone cottage nestled near the edge of the pine forest, overlooking a crystal-clear koi pond. "That is the guest house. It has its own kitchen, fireplace, and security system. It’s yours."

Before Clara could even process the cottage, a low, distinctive bark echoed from the covered terrace of the main house.

She turned. Lying on a thick orthopedic memory-foam mattress under a heat lamp was Titan. The massive Cane Corso was heavily bandaged around his midsection, an IV line taped to his front leg, supervised by a private veterinary nurse sitting nearby.

When Titan saw Clara walking across the courtyard, his heavy tail began to thump rhythmically against the mattress—thwump, thwump, thwump. He tried to push himself up on his front paws, letting out a soft, eager whine.

"Easy, old boy," Clara gasped, forgetting her swollen knee entirely as she jogged across the stone patio and dropped to her knees beside his mattress. "Don't pull your stitches, Titan. I’m right here."

The huge hound immediately dropped his massive head into her lap, exhaling a long, shuddering breath of pure contentment. He licked her hand once, his amber eyes half-closing as she gently stroked the undamaged fur along his neck and ears.

"He refused his pain medication two hours ago," the veterinary nurse said, looking at Clara in amazement. "He wouldn't let me approach with the syringe."

Clara looked down at the dog, speaking in a low, soothing rhythm she used to use to calm herself during long, brutal shifts. "We have to take our medicine, Titan. If we don't heal, we can't go chasing squirrels in the woods, can we? You have to be a brave boy for me."

She held out her hand to the nurse, taking the oral syringe of pain medication. Without lifting his head from her lap, Titan parted his jaws slightly, allowing Clara to administer the liquid without a single growl or flinch.

Julian stood leaning against the stone archway of the terrace, watching the scene with his hands shoved deep into his trouser pockets. The hard, calculating lines of his face had completely vanished, replaced by an expression of profound, quiet reverence.

"You have a gift, Clara," Julian murmured, walking over to sit on the edge of the stone planter nearby. "My own lieutenants can't approach him when he’s injured without protective sleeves."

"He knows who loves him," Clara said softly, continuing to stroke the dog's ears as his eyes fluttered shut under the medication. "Animals don't care about money, or mansions, or mafia reputations, Julian. They just care about who stands between them and the dark."

Julian’s gaze locked onto hers, his ice-blue eyes burning with an intensity that made the cool mountain air feel suddenly charged. "Some men are the exact same way, Clara."

Before she could respond to the heavy implication in his words, Marcus stepped out onto the terrace, his tactical radio hissing in his hand. His face was grim.

"Boss," Marcus said, stepping close to Julian so the nurse wouldn't hear. "We have a situation downtown. The Vance family just filed an emergency injunction with the city council to freeze our port expansion permits. And Vanessa’s father just put a two-hundred-thousand-dollar bounty on the street for whoever leaks the identity and location of the girl who 'sabotaged' his daughter's wedding."
