Chapter 13 - The Fall of the House of Vance

By eight o'clock that evening, the valley of Sterling Ridge was undergoing a brutal, synchronized shift of power that would be whispered about in high-society circles for decades.

It didn't happen with street shootouts or public chaos; Julian Rostova’s organization was far too disciplined for messy violence. It happened with cold, absolute, institutional efficiency.

At the Vance Enterprises thirty-story glass skyscraper downtown, teams of forensic accountants and private security operatives—accompanied by federal marshals executing emergency asset-seizure warrants brokered by Julian’s legal team—marched into the executive suites. They froze every corporate bank account, seized every server, and escorted Richard Vance out of his office in handcuffs under federal charges of conspiracy to commit interstate murder-for-hire.

At the same time, six miles away at the Vance family’s sprawling estate on the ridge, a single matte-black armored Suburban pulled up to the gated entrance.

Marcus Hale stepped out, accompanied by three operatives. They didn't knock. They bypassed the electronic gates using the very same security override codes Vanessa had foolishly leaked to the assassins that morning, marching straight through the mahogany front doors into the formal living room.

Vanessa Vance was sitting on a white silk sofa, sipping wine with her mother, celebrating what she believed was the imminent success of her hired trackers on the mountain.

When she saw Marcus step into her living room with his hand resting on his sidearm, the wine glass slipped from her fingers, spilling dark red liquid across her imported rug—an ironic echo of the blood Clara had spilled on her floor two weeks prior.

"What is the meaning of this?" Vanessa’s mother shrieked, standing up. "Who let you in here? I’m calling the police!"

"The police are currently at your husband's office executing federal racketeering warrants, ma'am," Marcus said coldly, stepping around the coffee table toward Vanessa. He pulled a pair of heavy steel flex-cuffs from his belt. "Vanessa Vance. You are under arrest by order of the Rostova syndicate for treason, attempted murder by poison, and conspiracy to breach a secured residential perimeter."

"You can't arrest me! You aren't cops!" Vanessa screamed, scrambling backward over the sofa, her face pale with terror as she realized her protection had entirely evaporated. "My father will destroy you! Julian wouldn't dare touch me!"

"Your father is currently in a federal holding cell without bail, Miss Vance," Marcus said, grabbing her smoothly by the wrists and securing the steel cuffs behind her back despite her thrashing and kicking. "And Mr. Rostova is the one who signed the warrant. Let's go. The boss is waiting."
