Chapter 16 - The Anniversary Gala

One year later, on a crisp October evening exactly two years after the incident that had changed their lives, Highcrest Academy hosted its first annual Charity Harvest Gala.

Unlike the exclusive, snobbish banquets of the past, tonight’s event was a massive, joyful celebration that raised over two million dollars for local animal rescue shelters and vocational scholarships across the state. The ballroom was packed with city officials, grateful students, estate staff, and high-society donors who had learned that under Julian and Clara Rostova’s leadership, disrespecting a service worker was an instant ticket out the door.

Clara stood near the grand archway of the west pavilion, dressed in a stunning emerald-green evening gown, sipping sparkling cider as she watched her culinary students proudly present gourmet harvest dishes to the smiling guests.

A heavy, warm arm wrapped securely around her waist from behind. Julian pressed a tender kiss to the exposed skin of her shoulder, his cheek brushing against hers as he looked out over the crowded room.

"The head instructor just told me your student catering team received three standing ovations in the dining room," Julian murmured against her ear, his blue eyes glowing with pride. "You've built something incredible here, Mrs. Rostova."

"We built it together, Mr. Rostova," Clara smiled, leaning her back comfortably against his chest as she rested her hand over his on her waist. "Though I think Titan deserves half the credit. He spent four hours in the kitchen this afternoon supervising the roast beef preparation."

Right on cue, a heavy, familiar weight pressed against Clara’s hip. Titan sat down on the marble floor beside her emerald gown, looking up at her with his warm amber eyes, hoping for a stray piece of gala appetizer.

Clara laughed, reaching down to scratch his favorite spot behind his ears. "No more roast beef for you tonight, old boy. You're going to spoil your appetite for your bedtime biscuit."

As they stood together in the archway—the former kitchen maid who refused to be invisible, the feared crime lord who had learned how to love, and the slate-gray hound who had brought them together—Clara looked down at the pristine, shining marble floor where her blood had once fallen.
