Chapter 3 - The Shadow of Sterling Ridge

The man who walked through the archway didn't look like a groom arriving for his bridal gala. He wore a dark charcoal suit without a tie, the top two buttons of his shirt undone, his jaw covered in three days of dark, rough stubble. His dark hair was disheveled, damp from the October rain outside, and his striking, ice-blue eyes scanned the room with the frantic, predatory intensity of a wolf hunting in the dark.
Julian Rostova.
Even among the ultra-wealthy of Sterling Ridge, the Rostova name was spoken in hushed tones. While the Vances built shopping malls and luxury condos, Julian controlled the ports, the private security firms, and the shadow financial networks that kept the valley running. He was thirty-two years old, ruthless, highly secretive, and possessed a reputation for violence that kept even the most arrogant politicians from crossing his path.
He had been missing for seventy-two hours. He hadn't attended the rehearsal dinner the night before, nor had he answered a single call from his fiancée’s family.
As Julian stepped into the pavilion, his cold gaze swept past the string quartet, past the frozen guests, and landed directly on the scene at the center of the archway: Vanessa standing with her chin raised in righteous anger, and Clara on the floor, her white blouse stained red, her arms wrapped tightly around the motionless gray hound.
Julian stopped dead in his tracks. The breath seemed to leave his lungs in a single, sharp exhale.
"Titan," he whispered.
The word was barely spoken, but the Cane Corso heard it. Despite the agony in his ribs, despite the blood loss, the massive dog’s ears twitched. He let out a low, weak whine and attempted to lift his heavy head from Clara’s lap, his amber eyes locking onto the man standing in the doorway.
Vanessa, entirely oblivious to the shift in the room's atmosphere, turned toward Julian with a dramatic, exasperated sigh.
"Julian, finally! You're hours late!" she said, stepping over Clara’s legs as if they were discarded trash to reach him. "You won't believe the incompetence of this venue. Some filthy kitchen maid brought a diseased stray right into our dining room. I had to physically intervene just to stop the beast from bleeding all over the bridal table. I demand we leave—"
She reached out to place her manicured hand on his chest.
Julian didn't just step back; his hand shot out, catching Vanessa by the wrist with a grip so sudden and violent that she gasped, her champagne flute dropping from her fingers to shatter on the floor beside Clara.
"You touched him?" Julian’s voice wasn't loud. It was a glacial, terrifying rasp that sounded like grinding stones. His blue eyes locked onto Vanessa's face, stripped entirely of whatever polite tolerance he had ever shown her. "You struck my dog?"
Vanessa’s face went pale, her mouth opening and closing wordlessly as she looked from Julian’s murderous expression down to the bleeding animal on the floor. "Your... your dog? Julian, be reasonable! It’s a filthy stray! It didn't have a collar! It tried to bite me!"
"He is a certified protection K9 who was stolen from my property three days ago during a home invasion," Julian said, his voice dropping another octave as he slowly released her wrist with a gesture of pure disgust. "I have torn half the underworld in this state apart looking for him. And I walk into this room to find you kicking his broken ribs."
He didn't spare her another glance. Julian ignored the gasping crowd, ignored his fiancée standing frozen in shock, and dropped to his knees on the marble floor directly across from Clara.
He didn't care about the blood soaking into the knees of his expensive trousers. He reached out, his large, scarred hands trembling slightly as he gently touched the hound’s head. Titan let out a long, shuddering sigh of recognition, his heavy snout leaning into Julian’s palm.
Then, Julian looked up at Clara. For the first time, she saw past the terrifying reputation of the mafia boss. She saw a man who was profoundly, desperately grateful.
"You held him," Julian said softly, his eyes taking in her blood-stained uniform, her bruised knees, and the way her arms were still locked protectively around his dog’s chest. "You shielded him."
"He was hurting," Clara whispered, her voice shaking as the adrenaline finally began to crash, leaving her cold and dizzy. "She hit him so hard, sir. I think... I think she broke something inside."

Julian’s jaw tightened, a muscle ticking in his cheek as his gaze shifted to the raw, bleeding wound on Titan's flank. Without taking his eyes off Clara, he reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek black satellite phone. He pressed a single button and held it to his ear.
"Marcus," Julian commanded into the receiver, his voice returning to that absolute, cold-blooded authority. "Bring the armored SUV to the front steps of Highcrest right now. Have the surgical trauma team waiting at the private clinic. We found Titan. And Marcus? Bring a secondary vehicle. We have a guest coming with us."
