Chapter 14 - The Riverfront Reckoning

At eleven o'clock at night, the industrial riverfront clinic warehouse was a fortress of silence. Outside, the rain had returned, drumming heavily against the corrugated steel roof.

Inside the sterile, subterranean holding bay, Vanessa Vance sat strapped to a metal chair in the center of the room. Her designer clothes were rumpled, her mascara was smeared with tears of panic, and her usual arrogant sneer was entirely gone, replaced by the trembling, wide-eyed terror of someone who had finally realized she was not untouchable.

The heavy steel door at the end of the room groaned open.

Julian walked in. He had shed his tactical gear, wearing a dark bespoke suit that made him look like an executioner. But what made Vanessa gasp and shrink back against her metal chair wasn't Julian—it was who was walking beside him.

On his left walked Clara Hayes, wearing a clean, warm wool sweater and jeans, looking entirely composed and unbroken. And trotting off-leash at her right side, his massive head held high, his amber eyes locked onto Vanessa with a low, rumbling growl deep in his chest, was Titan.

"Julian! Please!" Vanessa sobbed, straining against the cuffs as the hundred-and-thirty-pound Cane Corso stopped six feet away from her chair, his upper lip curling to reveal two inches of white, lethal canine teeth. "Keep that beast away from me! I’m sorry! I made a mistake! My dad put me up to it—he told me to get the codes!"

Julian stopped ten feet away, putting his hand gently on Titan’s head to hold the dog at bay. He looked down at his former fiancée with a gaze so entirely devoid of emotion it was more terrifying than rage.

"You ordered a sniper to shoot a woman on my patio, Vanessa," Julian said, his voice echoing coldly off the concrete walls. "You baked industrial rat poison into a cake and sent it to my home. You attempted to murder the person who saved my dog's life when you kicked him across a marble floor."

"I was angry! You humiliated me in front of everyone!" she wailed, tears streaming down her face. "You threw me away for a kitchen maid! What was I supposed to do?"

Clara stepped forward, separating herself from Julian and the dog. She walked within four feet of the metal chair, looking down at the woman who had tormented her, hunted her, and tried to end her life. There was no hatred in Clara’s eyes—only a profound, quiet pity that cut Vanessa deeper than any blade.

"I wasn't trying to steal your fiancé, Vanessa," Clara said softly, her voice steady and clear. "I just wanted to save a dying dog from freezing to death. You had all the money, all the status, and all the power in the world, but you couldn't bear the thought of someone showing mercy to a living creature that didn't benefit your aesthetic."

Clara turned to Julian, placing her hand gently on his arm. "She isn't worth it, Julian. Don't let her turn you into a murderer. Her father is in prison, her family is bankrupt, and the whole city knows what she did. Let the federal courts have her."

Julian looked at Clara, his ice-blue eyes softening instantly under her touch. He had brought Vanessa here to execute a syndicate sentence, ready to bury her in the river for what she had tried to do to his family. But looking at Clara—at her unshakeable moral courage, at her refusal to let vengeance stain her soul—he felt the darkness in his own chest recede.

He turned back to Vanessa, his voice hard as iron.

"You owe your life to the woman you called a kitchen whore," Julian said to Vanessa. "Marcus is transferring you to federal custody at the state line tonight. You will plead guilty to the federal conspiracy charges. You will serve your eight years in a federal penitentiary. And when you get out, if you ever step foot in this state again, Titan won't be on a leash. Do you understand?"

May you like

"Yes! Yes! I swear!" Vanessa sobbed, dropping her head to her knees in total, humiliating defeat.

Julian didn't look at her again. He took Clara’s hand in his, turned his back on the House of Vance forever, and led his wife-to-be and his dog out of the dark warehouse into the clean night air.
