Chapter 12 - The Line Crossed

The mention of Vanessa Vance’s name hung over the smoking lawn like a funeral shroud.
Julian didn't pull the trigger. He lowered his rifle slowly, his jaw set so hard the bone looked ready to fracture. He turned his head toward the cottage patio, where Clara was slowly standing up, her hands buried in Titan’s fur to keep the growling hound at her side.
Julian walked across the torn, bullet-riddled grass toward her. He dropped his rifle onto the patio table right next to the poisoned apple cake, taking Clara by the shoulders with both hands. His hands were shaking—not from adrenaline, but from the terrifying realization of how close she had come to dying.
"Are you hurt?" Julian asked, his voice rough and breathless as his eyes scanned her face, her arms, and her torso for blood. "Did any of the shrapnel hit you?"
"I’m okay. We’re both okay," Clara whispered, placing her hands over his on her shoulders, grounding him with her touch. "Julian, look at the cake."
Julian looked down at the white pastry box on the table. He saw the parted layers, the shimmering blue crystals of rat poison lined inside the frosting, and the shattered coffee mug on the stone floor.
His face drained of all color, leaving his skin as pale and cold as marble. Vanessa hadn't just hired trackers to kidnap Clara; she had sent a lethal, indiscriminate poison directly into his home—a poison that would have agonized and killed either Clara or Titan within minutes of ingestion.
"She tried to poison my family," Julian whispered. The word family slipped out naturally, absolute and undeniable.
He turned back to Marcus, who was zip-tying the surviving assassins on the grass.
"Marcus," Julian said, his voice dropping into a register so dark, so entirely devoid of human mercy that even his seasoned security guards stiffened at attention. "Call the strike squads from the riverfront barracks. Mobilize every operative we have in the valley."
"What are our orders, boss?" Marcus asked, standing up with his hand on his sidearm.
"We are done playing economic chess with Richard Vance," Julian stated cleanly, looking out over the valley below them. "Vanessa crossed the perimeter of my home with poison and rifles. She attempted to murder the woman under my protection. I want the Vance corporate headquarters locked down. I want Richard Vance’s accounts permanently seized. And I want Vanessa Vance brought to the high-security holding facility at the riverfront clinic by midnight tonight."
"Julian, wait," Clara said, stepping forward and catching his sleeve. Her eyes were wide with concern. "If you send strike squads into the city, the police will get involved! The FBI could intervene! You’ll be risking everything you built over a revenge hit!"
May you like
Julian turned back to her, taking her face gently between his hands. His thumbs stroked her cheekbones, his blue eyes softening only for her as he looked down into her worried face.
"I built my empire so that no one on this earth could ever take what is mine, Clara," Julian said softly, pressing his forehead against hers. "If I allow those people to attack my home, poison my dog, and threaten your life without facing total annihilation, then I am nothing. Stay here with Titan and the interior guard. When the sun comes up tomorrow, the Vance name will no longer exist in this valley."
