Chapter 9 - The Sentencing

The judge was a stern, unforgiving woman who had zero tolerance for medical fraud.

She looked down at Olivia with an expression of profound, absolute disgust.

“Mrs. Collins, your actions were not born out of desperation or addiction, but out of sheer, unadulterated greed,” the judge stated.

“You weaponized the sacred bond between a mother and a son to fund your lavish lifestyle.”

Olivia completely broke down, sobbing hysterically and begging the judge for mercy.

“I sentence you to twenty-five years in federal prison, without the possibility of early parole,” the judge declared, striking her heavy wooden gavel.

The sound echoed through the room like a gunshot, signaling the absolute end of Olivia’s reign of terror.

The bailiffs hauled her away, leaving a profound, peaceful silence in her wake.

Matthew’s medical license, which had been suspended during the investigation, was fully and unconditionally reinstated by the state board.

The hospital formally apologized to him and offered him his position as Chief of Pediatric Surgery back with a substantial raise.

He wrapped his arm around my shoulder, pulling me into a deep, emotional embrace.

“You never have to apologize to me, Matthew,” I smiled, holding my son tighter than I ever had before.
