Chapter 5 - The Financial Trail

I brought Sarah back to my house, hiding her in the basement while Matthew slept off his exhaustion upstairs.

I knew that witness testimony from an addict would not be enough to convict a wealthy, well-connected woman like Olivia.

We needed concrete, undeniable financial proof.

I woke Matthew up and explained everything I had uncovered in the last twenty-four hours.

He sat on the edge of the bed, weeping openly as the reality of his wife's betrayal washed over him.

“She ruined my medical license, Mom,” he cried, burying his face in his hands.

“We are going to get it back, Matthew, but I need you to focus,” I said firmly.

I needed him to access Olivia’s private laptop, which was still at their marital home.

Matthew knew she kept a backup hard drive hidden inside a hollowed-out book in her home office.

That night, while Olivia was out meeting with her criminal defense attorney, we snuck into the house.

Matthew bypassed the security system with his thumbprint, and we rushed directly into the study.

He pulled a massive dictionary from the bookshelf, flipping it open to reveal a hidden silver flash drive.

We plugged it into his computer and watched as dozens of encrypted folders appeared on the screen.

Matthew used a password he had seen Olivia type years ago: the date of their first anniversary.

The files unlocked instantly.

We found ledgers, offshore wire transfers, and cryptocurrency wallets containing over four million dollars.
