Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

We pulled into the driveway, the flashing red and blue lights reflecting off the windows of my house.
Before the officers could even unbuckle their seatbelts, the front door burst open.
Clara stood on the porch, holding Harper tightly by the arm.
Harper was crying frantically, struggling against Clara's iron grip.
"What is the meaning of this?" Clara shrieked at the police, playing the outraged victim perfectly.
Detective Ramirez stepped out of his car, his hand resting cautiously on his holstered weapon.
"Clara Davis, step away from the child," Ramirez ordered loudly.
Clara's eyes darted toward me as I stepped out of my car.
The look she gave me was one of pure, unadulterated hatred.
"You did this," she spat, her face twisting into a horrifying snarl.
"You ruined everything, Ethan!"
She suddenly yanked Harper backwards, dragging the screaming child back into the house.
She slammed the heavy oak door shut and locked the deadbolt.
"Breach the door!" Ramirez shouted to the other officers.
The cops rushed the porch, driving a heavy metal ram into the wood.
I stood by my car, completely paralyzed by fear.
The door splintered and gave way with a loud crash.
The officers flooded into the hallway, their weapons drawn.
"Police! Drop the knife!" I heard an officer yell from inside the living room.
I couldn't stay outside anymore.
I ran up the steps and pushed past the shattered doorframe.
Clara was backed into a corner of the living room, holding the large kitchen knife I had seen on the camera.
She had one arm wrapped tightly around Harper's neck, using the terrified little girl as a human shield.
"Nobody moves, or I swear to God I'll do it!" Clara screamed hysterically.
Harper was sobbing, her tiny hands clawing helplessly at Clara's arm.
My medical training vanished, replaced entirely by a father's desperate instinct.

"Clara, look at me," I said, stepping slowly into her line of sight.
"Let her go. It's me you're angry with, so just let her walk over to me."
