Chapter 7 - The Undeniable Proof

The sun rose on what felt like the most important day of my entire life.
I packed a small duffel bag with essentials and hid it in the trunk of my car.
I told Clara I had a mandatory hospital meeting and left the house early.
But I drove straight to the police station in the center of town.
I sat down with a detective named Ramirez, a seasoned cop with sharp eyes.
I laid out everything I had discovered about Clara's true identity and her psychological history.
"I need a warrant to remove my stepdaughter from that house immediately," I pleaded.
Ramirez looked over the psychiatric records and the fake birth certificate.
"This is deeply concerning, Dr. Evans, but I need proof of active abuse to kick a door down today," he explained.
"We need evidence that the child is in immediate physical danger right now."
I pulled out my phone, my hands shaking violently.
"I have hidden cameras in the house," I told him, opening the app.
I prayed to God that the cameras had captured something definitive.
I scrolled through the motion alerts from the previous day.
There it was.
At 4:15 PM, right after we returned from the park, Clara had gone into Harper's room.
The camera caught Clara grabbing Harper by her hair and throwing her violently to the floor.
"You told him, didn't you!" Clara screamed silently on the video, kicking the little girl in the ribs.
Detective Ramirez watched the footage, his jaw clenching tightly.
"That's all I need," Ramirez said grimly, standing up from his desk.
"I'm getting a judge on the phone right now, and I'm sending two squad cars to your address."
Relief washed over me, so powerful it made me dizzy.
"I'm going with you," I insisted, refusing to take no for an answer.
"You wait outside until we secure the premises," Ramirez ordered sternly.
We rushed out of the station, the sirens of the squad cars blaring to life.
I followed closely behind them in my own car, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm.

The nightmare was finally coming to an end.
I just had to get there before Clara realized what was happening.
