Chapter 5 - The Whisper in the Park

Before I could go to the police, I needed to make sure Harper understood she was safe with me.

When Clara returned from her showing, she immediately complained about a headache.

"I need to lie down for an hour," Clara sighed, rubbing her temples dramatically.

This was my perfect window of opportunity.

"Why don't I take Harper to the park down the street?" I suggested casually.

Clara waved a dismissive hand, not even looking at her daughter.

"Fine, just keep her quiet when you get back," she muttered, heading up the stairs.

I grabbed Harper's jacket and gently helped her put it on.

We walked in silence until we reached the neighborhood park.

It was a chilly afternoon, and the playground was completely empty.

We sat down on a wooden bench, watching the wind rustle the fallen leaves.

"Harper," I started softly, keeping my voice as gentle as possible.

She didn't look at me, her small hands gripping the edge of the bench tightly.

"I found your note," I whispered.

Her head snapped toward me, her eyes wide with sheer, unadulterated panic.

"Please don't tell her," she begged, her voice cracking. "She'll lock me in the dark again."

My heart shattered into a million pieces at those words.

"I will never, ever tell her," I promised, sliding closer to her.

"I know she hurts you, Harper, and I know she isn't your real mommy."

Tears instantly flooded the little girl's eyes, spilling over her pale cheeks.

"She told me my real mommy didn't want me," Harper sobbed quietly.

"She told me I have to be perfect, or no one will ever love me."

I wrapped my arms around her, pulling her small, shaking frame into my chest.

"She lied to you," I said firmly, stroking her hair.

"Your real mommy loved you very much, and I love you very much."

Harper buried her face in my coat, crying harder than I had ever seen a child cry.

"I'm going to get you out of that house, Harper," I whispered fiercely.

"I'm going to make sure she never touches you again, but I need you to be brave for just one more day."

May you like

She nodded against my chest, her tiny fingers clutching my jacket like a lifeline.

We sat there until her tears dried, forming a silent pact to end this nightmare together.
