Chapter 4 - The Secret Lockbox

The next day, Clara had a showing for a large colonial house out in the suburbs.

She told me she would be gone for at least three hours.

As soon as her car pulled out of the driveway, I went straight to work.

I needed to know who Clara really was, because the woman I married was a complete fabrication.

I went into our home office and began tearing through her filing cabinet.

Most of it was normal paperwork, including tax returns, utility bills, and real estate flyers.

But tucked all the way in the back of the bottom drawer was a small, heavy metal lockbox.

It was secured with a sturdy combination lock.

My mind raced as I tried to guess the combination.

I tried our anniversary date.

Nothing.

I tried her birthday.

Still nothing.

Then, on a hunch, I tried Harper's birthday.

The lock clicked, and the heavy lid popped open.

Inside, there were no jewels or savings bonds.

Instead, there was a thick stack of medical files, old newspaper clippings, and a different birth certificate.

I pulled out the birth certificate first.

The mother's name listed was not Clara.

It was a woman named Emily Davis.

My hands started to shake as I read the hospital records attached to the certificate.

Emily Davis was Clara's younger sister.

I quickly scanned the newspaper clippings.

The headline made the blood drain from my face completely.

"Tragic Car Accident Claims Life of Local Mother, Infant Daughter Survives."

The article detailed how Emily had died in a crash seven years ago, leaving baby Harper behind.

Clara wasn't Harper's biological mother.

She was her aunt, who had assumed custody after her sister's tragic death.

But why would she lie to me about this?

Why pretend to be her biological mother and erase her sister from existence?

I dug deeper into the medical files, finding a thick psychiatric report under Clara's name.

The words "narcissistic personality disorder" and "history of violent outbursts" were highlighted in grim detail.

Clara had been deemed unfit to care for children multiple times in the past.

She had somehow manipulated the system to get Harper.

I closed the lockbox, realizing I was living with a dangerous, deeply disturbed woman.

I needed a lawyer, and I needed the police, right now.
