Chapter 1 - The Purple Crayon

The piece of paper felt like a lead weight in my hand.

Three simple words written in purple crayon stared back at me.

"Don't ask Mommy."

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird desperately trying to escape.

I sat on the edge of the bed, my mind racing through every interaction I had ever witnessed between my new wife and her daughter.

Clara had always seemed like the picture-perfect mother.

She baked cookies, packed beautiful lunches, and brushed Harper’s hair every single morning.

But now, looking at this crumpled note, the illusion was shattering into a million jagged pieces.

I am an ER doctor.

I have spent years looking at injuries, deciphering the difference between a clumsy fall and a malicious strike.

Those bruises on Harper's arm were not from a gymnastics accident.

They were the unmistakable marks of a large hand gripping a small child with terrifying force.

And the fact that Harper was begging me not to ask her mother sent a cold shiver down my spine.

I carefully folded the note and slipped it into my wallet, hiding it behind my driver’s license.

I needed to act normal.

If Clara was hurting her, tipping my hand now could put Harper in immediate danger.

I walked downstairs, forcing my face into a calm, relaxed expression.

Clara was at the stove, humming a cheerful tune while flipping pancakes.

She turned to me with that bright, blinding smile that had made me fall in love with her just a year ago.

"Morning, honey," she chirped, kissing my cheek.

I swallowed the bile rising in my throat and kissed her back.

"Morning," I replied, my voice sounding strangely hollow to my own ears.

Harper was sitting at the kitchen island, her eyes glued to her plate of untouched food.

She didn't look up when I walked in.

Her small shoulders were hunched, making her look even tinier than she already was.

I realized then that this wasn't shyness.

This was survival.

I poured myself a cup of coffee, my hands trembling slightly against the ceramic mug.

I was going to find out the truth, no matter what it took.

And I was going to protect that little girl, even if it meant destroying my marriage.
