Chapter 10 - A New Beginning

It has been exactly one year since the police took Clara away.

The legal battles were long, brutal, and emotionally draining.

Clara was sentenced to fifteen years in a federal psychiatric prison for child abuse and fraud.

The state tried to put Harper into the foster care system, as I had no biological relation to her.

But I fought them with every ounce of strength and money I had.

I hired the best family lawyers in the state, and I didn't back down for a single second.

Three months ago, the judge finally signed the official adoption papers.

Harper is legally my daughter now.

We moved out of that cursed house and bought a small place near the beach.

The ocean air seems to wash away the bad memories, day by day.

Harper is eight years old now, and the transformation has been nothing short of miraculous.

She talks constantly, laughing loud and hard at my terrible dad jokes.

She joined a real gymnastics team, and this time, her bruises are actually from falling off the balance beam.

She never flinches when I walk into a room anymore.

Tonight, as I tucked her into bed, she reached under her pillow.

She pulled out a small piece of paper and handed it to me.

It was written in the same purple crayon she had used a year ago.

I held my breath as I unfolded the paper, a ghost of the old fear creeping into my chest.

But this note only had three different words written on it.

"I love you."

I smiled, tears welling up in my eyes, and kissed her forehead softly.

"I love you too, Harper," I whispered, turning on her star-shaped nightlight.

"More than anything in the whole world."

I closed her bedroom door, leaving it open just a crack so she could see the hallway light.

I walked downstairs, pouring myself a glass of water, feeling a profound sense of peace.

The monster was locked away in a cage where she belonged.

The bruises had healed, and the terrifying silence had been replaced by joy.

We had walked through absolute hell to find each other.

But looking at my beautiful, happy daughter, I knew it was all worth it.
