Chapter 8 - Arresting the Officers

Armed with the raw, unredacted body-cam footage and the wire-transfer records, I walked out of the server room accompanied by Agent Chen, Agent Jenkins, and four armed federal tactical investigators. It was 5:15 a.m., and the morning shift of local Oakridge police officers had begun trickling into the precinct, staring in absolute confusion at the armed federal presence dominating their bullpen.

Lieutenant Vance was standing near the front desk, arguing heatedly with a local union representative who had just arrived. Officer Miller was sitting at his desk, frantically typing on his keyboard, trying to look busy and detached from the unfolding disaster.

"Lieutenant Marcus Vance! Officer Thomas Miller!" my voice rang out across the crowded bullpen, cutting through the murmur of conversation like a gunshot.

The entire room fell dead silent. Dozens of local officers turned to watch as I marched directly toward Vance, my federal badge clipped to my belt, my eyes locked onto his face with unwavering authority.

"By order of the United States Department of Justice and the Federal District Court," I announced clearly, ensuring every officer in the building heard the charges, "you are both placed under federal arrest. You are charged with violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 242—Deprivation of Civil Rights Under Color of Law; Section 1519—Destruction and Alteration of Evidence in a Federal Investigation; and Section 201—Bribery of Public Officials."

Vance’s face went livid. He reached for his sidearm instinctively, a reflexive, arrogant motion born from years of unchecked local power.

"Don't even think about it, Vance!" Agent Chen barked, his own Glock 19 instantly cleared from its holster and leveled directly at Vance’s chest, mirrored by three other federal agents who raised their tactical weapons in unison. "Take your hand off that holster right now, drop to your knees, and interlock your fingers behind your head! Do it now!"

Realizing he was completely outgunned, outranked, and legally destroyed, Vance slowly lifted his hands away from his weapon, dropping heavily onto the linoleum floor. Officer Miller didn't even attempt to resist; he burst into tears, raising his hands in the air and sobbing as Agent Jenkins hauled him out of his chair and slammed him against the cubicle wall to apply heavy steel cuffs.

I walked up to Vance as Agent Chen secured his wrists tightly behind his back. I leaned down until my face was inches from his ear. "I told you that you had no concept of the proportions you were dealing with, Lieutenant. Enjoy the federal holding facility. I hear they don't treat corrupt cops very kindly."
