Chapter 14 - The Federal Press Conference

Two hours later, at 4:00 p.m., the press corps that had been camped outside the county courthouse was abruptly summoned to the federal district building in downtown Oakridge. The briefing room was packed to absolute capacity, with cameras lined up across the back wall and reporters shouting questions as I stepped up to the podium, flanked by Assistant U.S. Attorney Henderson and Special Agent Chen.
I did not wear a suit; I wore my federal field uniform, my badge gleaming against my tactical vest, my posture radiating the unshakable authority of the Department of Justice. I didn't begin with a lengthy prepared statement or political pleasantries. I simply tapped the microphone and looked directly into the camera array.
"An hour ago, representatives for the Vance and Sterling defense teams claimed before these cameras that today's federal arrests were the result of a rogue investigation designed to conceal a family mental health crisis," I spoke clearly, my voice cold and cutting through the silence of the room. "They claimed that Martha Sterling was the aggressor, and that local law enforcement acted with honor and integrity. We are not going to debate those claims with rhetoric. We are going to debate them with objective, empirical evidence."
I nodded to Agent Chen, who hit the keyboard of the audiovisual console. The massive eighty-inch digital screens hanging behind the podium flickered to life.
"This is Exhibit A," I announced. "Raw, unedited body-worn camera footage recovered from the unallocated server drives of the Oakridge Police Department, recorded at 0148 hours this morning by Officer Thomas Miller."
The room gasped in collective horror as the high-definition video of Chloe standing over my bleeding mother played across the screens. The audio of Chloe casually asking if "the old bitch is still breathing," followed by the handover of the five-thousand-dollar cash bribe to Officer Miller, echoed through the briefing room with devastating clarity. Several reporters covered their mouths; camera shutters fired in a deafening, continuous roar.

"And this," I continued as the video paused on Chloe’s face, holding up a transparent, tamper-evident evidence tube containing the black iron fireplace poker crusted with dried blood, "is Exhibit B. The primary murder weapon, recovered this morning from a hidden location where it was disposed of by Officer Miller in direct furtherance of the bribery conspiracy."
I leaned into the microphone, fixing my gaze on the news cameras broadcasting live across the state. "There is no mental health crisis in this family. There is only a predatory financial conspiracy executed by violent cowards who believed money and local political connections made them untouchable. To Arthur Vance Senior and any other co-conspirators currently attempting to obstruct justice: we have your bank records, we have your forged notary stamps, and federal agents are currently executing search warrants at your corporate headquarters. We are coming for all of you."
