Chapter 15 - Julian Breaks

By 7:00 p.m., the impact of our televised press conference had shattered whatever remaining psychological resolve Julian possessed. Sitting in the solitary confinement wing of the federal detention center, he had watched the broadcast on the common area monitor. He realized with terrifying certainty that Chloe’s father had completely thrown him under the bus—not once in his press conference had Arthur Vance Senior defended Julian; the entire defense strategy was built on framing my mother and blaming Julian for "failing to control his family."
Agent Chen and I walked into the proffer conference room where Julian was sitting with a court-appointed federal public defender. Julian was shivering, his hands cuffed to the mounting ring on the table, his face hollowed out by fear and exhaustion.
"Mr. Sterling," Assistant U.S. Attorney Henderson began, spreading a formal proffer agreement across the table. "You are facing thirty-five years in a federal penitentiary for conspiracy to commit attempted murder, wire fraud, and bribery of a public official. Your wife’s legal team is currently preparing a defense that claims you were the mastermind who manipulated her into attacking your mother to cover your own gambling debts. What is your response?"
Julian stared at the document, tears spilling onto the table. He looked up at me, his eyes pleading for a sibling mercy he had long since forfeited. "Vera... she’s trying to destroy me. Chloe’s father sent a lawyer to my cell an hour ago. He told me if I didn't sign a confession taking full responsibility for the assault and the bribe, they would make sure I never saw daylight again."
"They have no power here, Julian," I said coldly, sitting across from him. "The only authority that can save you from spending the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security facility is sitting at this table. But if you want a sentencing recommendation, you don't just give us Chloe. You give us the entire architecture of the Vance real estate syndicate."
Julian picked up the pen with trembling fingers. Without hesitating another second, he signed his full name to the bottom of the proffer agreement, formally waiving his right to trial and agreeing to act as a cooperating witness for the United States government.
"It started two years ago," Julian began, speaking rapidly as the digital recorder captured his confession. "Arthur Vance Senior was targeting elderly property owners in Oakridge whose homes were sitting on commercial zoning overlays. He used Lieutenant Vance to run police checks on them, finding out who lived alone or had medical issues. Then Evelyn Vance would generate forged powers of attorney or backdated tax liens, and Chloe would act as the corporate buyer, forcing them out of their homes for pennies on the dollar."

"How many properties?" Henderson asked, taking rapid notes.
"At least twelve," Julian confessed, wiping his nose with his sleeve. "When my gambling debts got out of control last month, Arthur told me the only way he would cover my losses was if I delivered my mother’s estate into the syndicate. They needed the Elmwood and Oakridge parcels to complete a twenty-million-dollar retail development deal. Chloe didn't just snap last night, Vera. She brought that iron poker into the dining room from the garage before Mom even arrived. It was a planned execution from the start."
