Chapter 5 - The Financial Trail

With the precinct completely under federal control and the local officers confined to the breakroom under armed supervision, I set up a makeshift command post inside Lieutenant Vance’s private office. Agent Sarah Jenkins, our team’s forensic financial analyst, set up her dual-screen tactical laptop on Vance’s mahogany desk, rapidly cross-referencing banking records we had subpoenaed via emergency federal order.

"We found the motive, Vera," Jenkins said, pointing a pen at a cascading series of highlighted transactions on her monitor. "This wasn't just a sudden family argument or a spontaneous assault. This was a calculated, premeditated attempt to execute a fraudulent estate transfer."

I leaned over her shoulder, my eyes scanning the spreadsheets. "Show me the routing timelines."

"For the last six months, Julian and Chloe have been bleeding cash," Jenkins explained, pulling up a secondary display showing offshore gambling debts and defaulted commercial real estate loans tied to Chloe’s name. "They are underwater by nearly two pointfour million dollars. Last Friday, an electronic transfer request was initiated to move one point two million dollars out of your mother’s primary family trust account into a shell company registered in Delaware."

"The trust account requires my mother’s physical biometric verification and her signature before any transfer exceeding fifty thousand dollars can clear," I noted, a cold realization dawning on me.

"Exactly," Jenkins said, tapping the keyboard to display a flagged bank notification dated yesterday afternoon. "The bank fraud department flagged the transaction and placed a temporary twenty-four-hour hold on the funds. They notified your mother via automated mail that signature confirmation was required in person by Monday morning."

The puzzle pieces snapped together with terrifying clarity. "Chloe knew that once my mother saw that notification, she would realize they were draining her accounts. They invited her over for dinner last night under the guise of a family reconciliation."

"They tried to force her to sign a general power of attorney document naming Chloe as her primary legal conservator," Jenkins confirmed, displaying a digital image of a draft legal document recovered from Julian’s synced cloud storage. "When your mother refused to sign away her estate and threatened to call you, Chloe grabbed the iron fireplace poker. They weren't just beating her, Vera. They were trying to cause enough traumatic brain injury to have her medically declared incompetent so the power of attorney would take effect by default."

I stared at the monitor, my blood running ice-cold. My own brother had stood by and watched his wife attempt to permanently brain-damage our mother just to cover his gambling debts and preserve his luxury lifestyle.
