Chapter 1 - The Lockdown

The digital clock on the wall read 3:42 a.m. when my transmission went through. Less than five seconds after my thumb pressed send on my encrypted satellite device, the dispatch consoles across the bullpen flashed a stark, blinding crimson. The rhythmic hum of the precinct’s computer towers died instantly, replaced by the sharp, metallic click of automated network deadlocks engaging one after another.

A young dispatch officer at the far corner desk slammed his mouse against the mousepad, cursing aloud. "Hey! What just happened? The CAD system is completely locked out. My screen is blacked out with a federal seal."

Lieutenant Marcus Vance spun around from his doorway, his face reddening with instant rage. He marched toward my space, his heavy boots thudding against the scuffed linoleum floor. "What did you just do on that phone, lady? I told you not to make this a bigger issue than it already is! You are interfering with an active local investigation, and I can have you thrown in a holding cell for obstruction of justice!"

I didn't back away or flinch. I took two slow steps forward until I was standing inches from him, forcing him to look down at me. "You don't have an active investigation, Lieutenant. What you have is an active crime scene, a severe civil rights violation under Title 18 of the United States Code, and a systemic cover-up that ends tonight. Your station servers are currently being mirrored and preserved by the Department of Justice Cyber Crimes Division in Washington. If anyone attempts to unplug a terminal, reboot a server, or tamper with a body-worn camera dock, it will be treated as federal spoliation of evidence."

Vance’s jaw dropped slightly. He looked over my shoulder at the desk sergeant, who was staring at his frozen monitor in absolute terror.

"Now," I said, my voice dropping to an icy, uncompromising whisper that carried across the silent bullpen, "you are going to take the keys off your belt, walk over to that metal bench, and remove the handcuffs from my mother. Then you are going to call for an emergency medical transport unit. If those steel cuffs are on her wrists for one more sixty-second cycle, I will personally add felony unlawful restraint to the federal indictment I am drafting against you."

Chloe stood up from her seat across the room, her manufactured tears vanishing instantly as her face twisted with indignation. "Julian! Are you just going to let her talk to the police like that? Tell them to arrest her! She’s crazy just like her mother!"

Julian remained glued to his plastic chair, his face pale and sweating. He looked from Chloe to me, then down at his trembling hands, completely paralyzed by the realization of what they had triggered. Vance hesitated for three agonizing seconds, his hand hovering over his utility belt, before he reluctantly reached for his handcuff keys.
