Chapter 1 - The Silence of a Brother

Julian did not look at Silas Thorne immediately.
Instead, he carefully wrapped the heavy wool coat tighter around Elena's freezing, trembling frame.
The air in the cold storage room felt exceptionally thick with unspoken, terrifying violence.
Leo clung perfectly to his mother, his tiny hands gripping the torn fabric of her uniform like a lifeline.
Julian slowly stood up, turning his broad shoulders to face his second-in-command.
Silas wore an expression of perfectly constructed shock, but Julian saw the microscopic twitch in his jaw.
"Roman, get Elena to the medical wing on the third floor immediately," Julian commanded with absolute authority.
"Victor, carry the boy and do not let him out of your sight for a single second."
The two enforcers moved with brutal efficiency, lifting the battered chef and her weeping son away from the freezing hell.
Julian and Silas were left entirely alone in the pale, buzzing fluorescent light of the cellar.
"Julian, I swear to God I had absolutely no idea she was locked down here," Silas lied smoothly.
"Victoria told me she was securing the expensive caviar, and I simply trusted your future wife."
Julian reached into his tailored pocket and pulled out a silver cigar case, his movements dangerously calm.
"You signed off on a heavy-duty chain and a digital padlock for a room that only holds food," Julian observed coldly.
"Since when do we secure truffles with the same industrial locks we use for our illegal weapons shipments?"
Silas took a half-step forward, his hands raised in a gesture of brotherly surrender.
"The wedding has everyone incredibly on edge, and security protocols have been heavily tightened across the entire board."
Julian lit his cigar, blowing a thick cloud of smoke into the freezing air between them.
He knew exactly what Silas was doing, but a king never strikes until all the treacherous pawns are clearly visible.

"Find Victoria and bring her to my private office in exactly fifteen minutes," Julian said softly.
He walked past Silas without another word, leaving his oldest friend standing in the freezing darkness.
