Chapter 9 - The Verdict

"He became obsessed with secrecy," I testified, my voice steady and clear for the record.
"He changed passwords, diverted mail, and gaslit me whenever I asked simple questions."
I looked at Adam, who dropped his head in absolute shame.
"He introduced Brooke as a consultant, but she was a parasite brought in to drain my children's future."
The defense objected, but the judge overruled them, allowing my statement to stand.
I detailed the discovery of the fraudulent LLC and the steps I took to protect my father's legacy.
By the time I finished, there wasn't a sympathetic face left in the jury box.
The trial lasted four agonizing days, filled with technical financial jargon and dramatic betrayals.
On Friday afternoon, the jury foreman stood to read the verdict.
"On the charge of wire fraud, we find the defendant, Adam Sterling... guilty."
Adam let out a loud sob, collapsing forward onto the defense table.
"On the charge of conspiracy to commit grand larceny, we find the defendant, Brooke Vance... guilty."
Brooke stood completely rigid, staring blankly ahead as her reality fractured.
The judge did not offer leniency.
Adam was sentenced to eight years in federal prison for his role in the financial crimes.
Brooke received twelve years, given her premeditated intent and the severity of the forgery.
Helen was given three years of probation and mandatory restitution, a merciful sentence for a pathetic woman.
As the bailiffs moved in to handcuff Adam, he turned to look at me one last time.
"I'm sorry, Sarah," he mouthed silently, tears streaming down his face.
I did not nod.
I did not smile.

I simply turned my back on him and walked out of the courtroom with my children.
The heavy doors closed behind us, shutting away the darkness of the past twenty years forever.
