Chapter 8 - The Courtroom

The courthouse was a grand, intimidating building with heavy mahogany doors and marble floors.

I walked in flanked by Diane on my left and my two children on my right.

Emma held my hand tightly, while Jacob stood tall, projecting a protective aura.

We took our seats in the front row of the gallery just as the bailiff announced the judge.

Adam was led into the room first, wearing an orange jumpsuit that clashed violently with his pale, terrified face.

He looked at us, his eyes begging for a mercy I no longer possessed.

I looked away, staring straight ahead at the judge's bench.

A moment later, Brooke was escorted in, also in standard-issue prison clothing.

Her arrogant smirk was gone, replaced by a hollow, sunken expression.

The prosecution laid out the evidence with surgical precision.

They played the video Jacob had recorded of Brooke and Helen in Adam's office.

They presented the forged medical documents proving the fake pregnancy.

They traced the financial transactions linking Adam's secret crypto accounts to Brooke's offshore aliases.

When it was Helen's turn to take the stand, she looked ten years older.

She cried as she admitted to stealing the original will and handing it to Brooke to facilitate the fraud.

"Why did you do it, Helen?" the prosecutor asked.

"Adam told me Sarah was going to cut me off financially," Helen sobbed, a pathetic excuse for a mother.

"Brooke promised me safety."

Brooke's attorney tried to cross-examine, but the evidence was overwhelming.

Adam's lawyer attempted to paint Adam as a victim of Brooke's seduction and manipulation.

It was a circus of cowards turning on one another.

When I was finally called to the stand, the courtroom fell dead silent.

I swore on the Bible and sat down, my eyes locking directly with Brooke's.

"Mrs. Sterling," the prosecutor began gently.

"Can you describe your husband's behavior regarding your family's finances over the last six months?"

I took a deep breath, ready to drive the final nail into their coffins.
