Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The sound of Adam’s crystal glass shattering against the marble floor echoed through the dead silence of the ballroom.

Brooke stood near the doorway, her hand resting deliberately over her flat stomach.

Two hundred guests stared at her, their collective breath caught in their throats.

My husband’s face transitioned from pale to a sickening shade of gray.

"What did you just say?" Adam choked out, his voice trembling over the microphone he had dropped to his side.

Brooke did not look at him.

Her cold, calculating eyes remained locked on mine.

"The trust wasn't established for your children, Sarah," Brooke repeated, a wicked smirk playing on her lips.

"It was established for the true heir."

The implication hung in the air like toxic smoke.

My mother-in-law, Helen, let out a pathetic whimper and collapsed into a nearby chair.

Jacob, my brave seventeen-year-old son, stepped in front of me as if to shield me from Brooke’s venom.

"Get out of here before I call the police," Jacob demanded, his voice cracking with protective rage.

The process server, still blocking the exit, crossed his arms and waited for my command.

"Let her leave," I said, my voice eerily calm despite the hurricane raging inside my chest.

"But Mom," Emma whispered, tears finally spilling down her cheeks.

"She has the summons, and the accounts are already frozen," I told my daughter loud enough for the entire room to hear.

"Brooke can walk out that door, but she can't touch a single dime."

Brooke's smirk faltered for a fraction of a second.

She turned on her heel, pushing past the process server, and disappeared into the night.

Adam took a step toward me, his hands raised in surrender.

"Sarah, please, I didn't know about a baby," he pleaded, tears of panic welling in his eyes.

I looked at the man I had loved for two decades, realizing I didn't know him at all.

"Don't speak to me," I said, turning my attention to the woman trembling in the chair.

"Helen," I commanded, staring down at my mother-in-law.

"You have exactly one minute to tell me what was in that folder, or my lawyer will add you to the lawsuit as a co-conspirator."

Helen sobbed, hiding her face in her hands.

May you like

"It was your father's original will," she confessed, her voice muffled by her tears.

The ballroom erupted into chaotic murmurs once again.
