Chapter 3 - The Flight Risk

I read the text message twice to ensure my eyes were not deceiving me.

"Where is she heading?" I texted back quickly.

"The Cayman Islands," Mark replied almost instantly.

I looked up from my screen to see Adam frantically pacing the floor, dialing a number on his cell phone.

"Pick up, Brooke, pick up," he muttered to himself, completely ignoring the devastation he had caused.

"She's not going to answer you, Adam," I said coldly.

He stopped pacing and glared at me.

"You ruined everything, Sarah!" he shouted, projecting his guilt onto me.

"You just couldn't let me have this one business venture!"

I actually laughed, a bitter, hollow sound that echoed off the high ceilings.

"A business venture?" I asked, stepping closer to him.

"You call stealing my father's money and knocking up your fake consultant a business venture?"

Emma stood beside me, her eyes hardened with a maturity no teenage girl should have to possess.

"Dad, you're pathetic," she said, her voice dripping with disgust.

Adam winced, as if her words had physically struck him.

"Emma, sweetheart, you don't understand," he pleaded, reaching out to her.

She swatted his hand away.

"Don't ever touch me again," she fired back.

My phone buzzed again, lighting up with a call from Mark.

I answered it and put it on speakerphone so Adam could hear his empire crumbling.

"Sarah," Mark's voice boomed through the quiet room.

"The authorities intercepted Brooke at the tarmac."

Adam gasped, his phone slipping from his sweaty grasp and clattering to the floor.

"Did they arrest her?" I asked, maintaining my composure.

"They detained her for questioning regarding the forged signatures on the LLC," Mark confirmed.

"But Sarah, you need to know something else."

"What is it?" I asked.

"She's not pregnant," Mark revealed.

The silence in the room became absolute.

Adam dropped to his knees, burying his head in his hands as the reality of his stupidity finally caught up to him.
