Chapter 7 - The Interrogation Room

Three days later, I found myself sitting in a cold, sterile room at the local FBI field office.

An agent named Miller sat across from me, a thick file resting on the metal table.

"Mrs. Sterling, we appreciate your cooperation," Agent Miller said, opening the file.

"I want them both behind bars," I stated clearly, leaving no room for misunderstanding.

Miller slid a photograph across the table.

It was a surveillance still of Brooke Vance standing at a bank teller's window.

"Brooke attempted to wire three million dollars to a non-extradition country yesterday," Miller explained.

"Did she succeed?" I asked, my heart rate accelerating.

"No," Miller smiled slightly. "Your accountant placed a hard freeze on the routing numbers."

I silently thanked Mark for his absolute brilliance.

"Where is Adam?" I inquired, needing to know where my dangerous husband was lurking.

Miller sighed, sliding another piece of paper toward me.

It was an arrest warrant.

"We picked him up this morning at a cheap motel on the outskirts of the city," Miller told me.

"He was trying to buy a fake passport."

I closed my eyes, absorbing the absolute ruin of the man I once respected.

"And Helen?" I asked, almost dreading the answer.

"Your mother-in-law surrendered to local authorities last night," Miller replied.

"She is offering full cooperation in exchange for a plea deal regarding her involvement in the forgery."

Every single one of them had fallen into the trap they dug for me.

"We need you to testify at the grand jury hearing next week," Miller said, leaning forward.

"Brooke is claiming Adam was the mastermind, and Adam is blaming Brooke."

I opened my eyes, a fierce determination settling deep in my bones.

"I will testify," I promised.

"I will tell them everything."

I stood up, feeling lighter than I had in years, ready to face the final battle in court.
