Chapter 6 - The Setup

I immediately dialed Diane, my attorney, and relayed the conversation I just had with Brooke.

"Vance?" Diane said, her keyboard clacking furiously in the background.

"That changes everything, Sarah. This establishes premeditation and malicious intent."

"She said Adam bonded her out using a crypto wallet," I added.

"That wallet wasn't disclosed in our preliminary financial discovery," Diane noted, her voice dripping with shark-like excitement.

"Adam is hiding assets during a divorce proceeding, which is a massive felony."

"Can we track it?" I asked, looking out the kitchen window at my beautiful garden.

"With Mark's help, we can subpoena the exchange," Diane assured me.

Just then, I heard a car door slam in the driveway.

I looked out to see Adam storming up the front walk, looking disheveled and frantic.

He was wearing the same tuxedo pants from the night before, though his jacket was gone.

"Diane, Adam is here," I warned her.

"Do not let him in," Diane ordered. "Call the police immediately."

I hung up, locked the deadbolt, and dialed 911.

Adam began pounding on the front door.

"Sarah! Open the door! I need to talk to you!" he bellowed.

I stood in the foyer, keeping my distance from the heavy oak door.

"The police are on their way, Adam!" I shouted back.

"Brooke is crazy, Sarah!" he yelled, his voice breaking with panic.

"She took the rest of the crypto! She drained everything when I fell asleep!"

I felt a twisted sense of poetic justice wash over me.

He had betrayed his family for a woman who was only using him as a pawn.

"You made your bed, Adam," I said quietly, though I knew he couldn't hear me through the wood.

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder with every passing second.

Adam cursed loudly, kicking the door in frustration before sprinting toward his car.

He peeled out of the driveway just as two police cruisers turned onto our street.

The hunters were finally becoming the hunted.
