Chapter 5 - The Secret Diary

When we returned from the hospital clinic early that afternoon, Julian’s car was gone from the driveway. He had finally given up waiting in the cold and retreated to his mother’s townhouse. The house felt lighter, cleaner, and safer without his looming presence, but my mind kept drifting back to one specific detail from the previous night: the small notebook lying next to Evelyn’s stove.

Why was she logging dates and measurements? Why the obsessive tracking of my bone broth?

While Leo took his afternoon nap safely monitored by Maya, I sat at my laptop and started doing some digging into Evelyn’s recent social media activity and online community groups. For months, Julian had claimed his mother was suffering from a mysterious, debilitating autoimmune flare-up that required constant care and expensive supplements.

It didn't take long to find the truth. Evelyn had a public profile on a holistic "natural healing" forum.

I scrolled through her recent posts, my blood pressure skyrocketing with every click. She wasn't sick. She wasn't dying. She had become obsessed with a viral, high-end "cellular rejuvenation" diet that promised to reverse skin aging and boost energy levels through the consumption of organic, collagen-rich marrow broth cooked for a minimum of twenty-four hours.

“My wonderful son is bringing me custom-made artisan bone broth every night!” Evelyn had posted just five days ago, attaching a photo of one of my labeled glass jars sitting on her granite countertop. “The quality is amazing. My joint pain is gone, my skin is glowing, and I’m saving hundreds of dollars not having to buy it from specialty health stores!”

One of her online friends had commented: “Isn’t your daughter-in-law making that for your sick grandson?”

Evelyn’s reply made me want to throw my computer through the window: “Oh, kids are resilient! My grandson is fine, he just had a minor procedure. But at my age, proper nutrition is essential for longevity. A good son knows how to honor his mother’s health first!”

She had manipulated Julian into stealing our child’s medical recovery food just so she could participate in a vanity anti-aging diet. And Julian, with his endless, pathetic need for his mother’s approval, had eagerly complied, literally letting his own infant son starve and lose weight just to be Evelyn’s "golden boy." I printed out every single webpage, timestamped comment, and photo, adding them to the thick manila folder that was rapidly becoming my divorce file.
