Chapter 4 - Calling the Specialist

At 8:30 a.m. sharp, as soon as the doors to the pediatric surgical clinic opened, I was on the phone with Dr. Aris, the lead specialist overseeing Leo’s recovery. My voice was surprisingly steady as I explained exactly why my son’s weight chart had taken such a dangerous, inexplicable dive over the past three weeks.
There was a long, heavy silence on the other end of the line after I finished detailing the stolen jars, the midnight feedings, and Julian’s admission that he was replacing our son’s organic bone broth with watered-down formula and canned alternatives during his turn with the night shifts.
“Mrs. Vance,” Dr. Aris finally said, his voice laced with professional horror and righteous anger. “I want to be completely transparent with you. What your husband did is not just a marital dispute. This constitutes medical endangerment of a minor. Leo’s gastrointestinal tract was surgically reconstructed; he cannot process standard sodium-heavy canned foods or basic formula right now without risking severe inflammation and malabsorption.”
“I know,” I choked out, a fresh wave of tears hitting me as the clinical reality of Julian’s actions washed over me. “I stopped him, Dr. Aris. I have secured the food, my sister is here to supervise all feedings, and Julian is no longer in the home. But I need to know what to do next for Leo.”
“Bring him in at eleven o'clock today,” Dr. Aris instructed firmly. “We need to run a full metabolic panel to ensure his kidneys and liver haven't been stressed by whatever inappropriate foods your husband was secretly giving him during the night. And Clara? I will be documenting all of this in his official medical chart. As a mandated reporter, I am required to note why a patient under my care suffered an unexplained nutritional regression.”
“Please do,” I said without a single ounce of hesitation. “Document every single word.”

When Maya and I arrived at the hospital clinic later that morning, Leo was pale, but his eyes brightened slightly as I held him close to my chest. Dr. Aris examined him with meticulous care, ordering blood work and checking his surgical incisions.
Before we left, the doctor handed me a sealed, stamped folder containing a comprehensive medical affidavit detailing the direct correlation between the missing dietary nutrition and Leo’s compromised recovery. “Keep this safe,” Dr. Aris told me, his eyes dead serious. “If your husband tries to fight you for custody or access, this document will prove exactly who he prioritized when his son was vulnerable.”
