Chapter 19 - The Fall of Julian and Evelyn

In the months following the trial, the consequences of Julian and Evelyn’s toxic, codependent relationship came crashing down on them with the relentless force of an avalanche. Without access to my income, my credit score, or the marital savings he had so eagerly siphoned, Julian’s financial reality imploded almost overnight.
His employer, a prestigious regional architectural firm, conducted an internal review following his high-profile arrest at the hospital and the embarrassing scene in the downtown parking garage. Citing morality clauses and the distraction of wage garnishments, they terminated his employment contract within three weeks of the divorce decree.
With his corporate income gone and burdened by massive legal debt, Julian was forced to vacate his luxury rental downtown. He had only one place left to go: his mother’s cramped, two-bedroom townhouse.
The reunion was anything but a happy family gathering. Evelyn, who had been convicted of misdemeanor harassment and sentenced to two years of strict probation and community service, was furious that her "golden boy" was no longer a high-earning corporate provider.
Without the stolen marital funds to pay for her gourmet bone broth deliveries, her holistic spa treatments, or her private overnight aides, Evelyn’s lifestyle reverted to the mundane reality she had fought so bitterly to escape. The townhouse fell into disrepair; the bills piled up on the kitchen counter, unopened and unpaid.
Mutual acquaintances from my old neighborhood occasionally filled Maya in on the grim reality of their daily existence. Neighbors reported hearing constant, vicious screaming matches echoing from inside the townhouse at all hours of the night.

Evelyn blamed Julian for ruining their lives by getting caught with the soup and failing to fight for his money in court. Julian, trapped in a claustrophobic hell of his own making, blamed his mother for manipulating him into destroying his marriage and losing his only child.
He had chosen to be his mother’s husband instead of my partner and Leo’s father. Now, sitting in a dingy living room eating cheap, sodium-heavy canned soup while listening to an bitter old woman complain about her joints, Julian finally got exactly what he had sacrificed his family for: he had his mother, all to himself, forever.
