Chapter 15 - Evelyn’s Confession

With Julian sitting in the county jail on a seventy-two-hour hold for violating his restraining order, Evelyn was left completely alone in her townhouse without her financial enabler, her emotional punching bag, or her luxury grocery deliveries. The sudden evaporation of her comfortable, coddled existence drove her into a state of reckless, manic desperation.

On the evening before Julian’s bail hearing, my doorbell rang. I checked the security camera monitor and felt a cold jolt of adrenaline: it was Evelyn, standing on my porch alone in the freezing rain, her hair matted and her eyes wild.

I didn't open the door. Instead, I picked up my smartphone, initiated the cloud-recording application that synced directly with my front porch security microphone, and pressed the two-way intercom button.

“You are violating a protective order, Evelyn,” I said through the outdoor speaker, my voice crystal clear. “The police have already been notified and are three minutes away. Leave my property immediately.”

“I don't care about the police!” Evelyn screamed at the camera lens, slamming her frail fists against the reinforced oak door. “You ruined everything! Julian’s bank accounts are frozen! My private nurse quit because her checks bounced! My landlord is threatening eviction because Julian hasn't paid my rent in two months! You need to drop these charges and give him back his money right now!”

“He stole forty thousand dollars from his son’s medical savings to fund your lifestyle, Evelyn,” I replied coldly. “You stole food from a child with a stitched-up stomach. You deserve everything that is happening to you.”

“That boy is just a baby! He doesn't know the difference between formula and soup!” Evelyn shrieked, her mask completely dissolving as her narcissistic rage took over the microphone. “I am the matriarch of this family! Julian owes me his life! I told him to take those jars! I told him to empty your freezer! If I can't have my son’s full attention and money, then your brat didn't deserve to heal either! Julian belongs to his mother first, and I will make sure you never know a day of peace!”

Behind her on the street, the silent, flashing blue lights of two police cruisers glided to a halt by the curb. Three officers stepped out, their flashlights illuminating Evelyn’s soaked, hysterical figure on my porch.

“Evelyn Vance!” the lead officer commanded, unholstering his handcuffs. “Step away from the door and put your hands behind your back! You are under arrest for felony violation of a protective order, stalking, and harassment.”

I watched through the high-definition monitor as the woman who had tormented my family and endangered my son’s life was led away in handcuffs, sobbing and cursing into the cold night air, her confession recorded in pristine, undeniable digital audio.
