Chapter 3 - The Gaslighting Begins

By 7:00 a.m., my phone was exploding with notifications. Julian had spent the remainder of the night sleeping in his sedan parked in our driveway, and with the sunrise came his coordinated campaign of psychological manipulation. He sent paragraph after paragraph of text messages, alternating between pathetic apologies and aggressive accusations.

“You are reacting hysterically to a simple misunderstanding,” one text read. “My mother is an elderly woman dealing with chronic fatigue and joint inflammation. The broth was helping her get her strength back. You made gallons of it, Clara! Why are you being so greedy with soup? You’re acting like I committed a crime when I was just trying to be a supportive family man.”

I sat at the kitchen table, sipping a cup of black coffee while Maya prepared a fresh, warmed jar of broth for Leo’s morning feeding. I read the text aloud, my lip curling in disgust.

“A simple misunderstanding?” Maya scoffed, stirring the nutrient-dense liquid with a silver spoon. “He’s calling stealing prescribed nutritional recovery food from a toddler ‘being greedy with soup’? He is completely delusional.”

Ten minutes later, my phone rang. It wasn’t Julian; it was my mother-in-law, Evelyn. Against my better judgment, I pressed the speakerphone button and set the device on the table, signaling Maya to start recording on her phone.

“Clara, dear,” Evelyn’s voice came through, dripping with condescending sweetness that made my skin crawl. “I think we all let our emotions get the better of us last night. Julian is out in the cold car, shivering. You need to unlock the door and let your husband inside so we can put this silly little drama behind us.”

“There is nothing silly about my son losing weight after major surgery, Evelyn,” I replied coldly. “Your son stole food directly out of a recovering child’s mouth to feed your ego and your made-up ailments.”

Evelyn’s tone shifted instantly from sweet to venomous. “Made-up ailments? How dare you! I am a senior citizen! I raised Julian, and I come first! A wife’s duty is to support her husband’s family, not hoard food like a paranoid miser! If you don't let Julian back in right now, I will tell everyone in our family how you are abusing an elderly woman and kicking a good father out of his own home!”

“Tell whoever you want, Evelyn,” I said, leaning closer to the microphone. “Because I have a video of your ‘good son’ stating he doesn't care if his son eats processed junk while his surgical wounds are healing. Let’s see how the family likes that story.” I ended the call and blocked her number.
