Chapter 18 - The Verdict
Judge Sterling didn't even retire to his chambers to deliberate; he delivered his ruling directly from the bench, his voice ringing with absolute finality as his pen flew across the official judicial decree.
“The court hereby finds the respondent, Julian Vance, guilty of severe marital waste, fiduciary fraud, and active endangerment of a minor child,” Judge Sterling read aloud. “It is the order of this court that the marriage between Clara Vance and Julian Vance is immediately dissolved on grounds of cruel and inhuman treatment.”
I felt Maya’s hand squeeze mine under the table, her fingernails digging into my palm as we waited for the custody terms.
“Sole legal and physical custody of the minor child, Leo Vance, is awarded exclusively to the mother, Clara Vance,” the judge continued. “The respondent is stripped of all decision-making authority regarding the child’s medical, educational, and personal welfare. Due to the documented history of physical endangerment and abduction attempts, the respondent is denied all unsupervised visitation.”
Julian let out a choked, desperate sob, burying his face in his arms on the defense table, but Judge Sterling wasn't done.
“Should the respondent wish to exercise visitation, it shall be limited to one two-hour session per month, conducted entirely within the secure, monitored facility of the County Supervised Visitation Center, at the respondent’s sole financial expense. Furthermore, a permanent, five-year order of protection is issued against both Julian Vance and his mother, Evelyn Vance, barring them from coming within one thousand feet of the petitioner, the minor child, or their primary residence.”
Next came the financial division, and Victoria Vance’s meticulous accounting work paid off in full.
“Regarding marital assets: The marital residence is awarded one hundred percent to the petitioner, with zero equity payout required to the respondent, as restitution for the $38,000 in siphoned marital funds and the emotional distress inflicted upon the family. The respondent is ordered to pay statutory maximum child support, along with thirty percent of his gross monthly income as spousal maintenance for a period of seven years, via automatic wage garnishment effective immediately.”

Judge Sterling slammed his gavel down against the sounding block with crushing force. “This court stands adjourned. Bailiffs, escort Mr. Vance from the courtroom immediately so the petitioner may depart in peace.”
As we walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sunlight, I looked down at the certified copies of the decree in my hands. The nightmare was officially over. My son was safe, my home was secure, and the man who had tried to destroy us was nothing more than a bad memory.
