Chapter 9 - The Trap in the Boardroom

Julian jumped to his feet, his chair scraping loudly against the hardwood floor, his face flushing a deep, angry crimson. “Elena! What the hell do you think you are doing? How dare you freeze my wife’s operational accounts! I am her legal husband! I am the statutory heir to this estate under community property laws! Restore those administrative passcodes immediately!”

“Community property laws apply only to assets acquired during the course of a legal marriage, Mr. Vance,” Elena replied coldly, setting her briefcase onto the mahogany table without even looking at him. “As you are well aware, Ms. Sterling required you to sign a comprehensive, ironclad prenuptial agreement three days prior to your wedding ceremony. That document explicitly categorized all Sterling Global assets, real estate holdings, and corporate treasury accounts as separate, non-marital property entirely exempt from spousal claims.”

“That prenuptial agreement was contingent upon Victoria surviving to designate a successor!” Julian argued, slamming his fist onto the table, his carefully constructed widower persona beginning to crack in front of the bankers. “With her death, and the death of our unborn child, statutory intestacy laws override the premarital contract! I am the sole surviving beneficiary! This firm belongs to me!”

In the corner of the room, Chloe Mercer stood up, her eyes darting nervously toward the security guards stationed at the doors. “Julian... maybe we should discuss this in private with your personal attorneys...”

“No! We discuss it right here!” Julian roared, pointing a trembling finger at Elena. “I demand that Continental Trust recognize my executive standing right now! If you do not release the frozen funds, I will file an emergency injunction in federal court this afternoon and sue this bank for tortious interference!”

Mr. Henderson looked from the red-faced, shouting developer to Elena Rostova, whose posture remained completely unperturbed and serene. “Ms. Rostova,” the banker said quietly. “Can you clarify the legal standing of the estate? If Ms. Sterling has indeed perished without a surviving heir, what are the governance instructions?”

“That is the precise reason I requested this assembly today, Mr. Henderson,” Elena said, opening her leather briefcase and extracting a sleek, silver remote control. She turned toward the massive eighty-inch digital presentation screen mounted on the wall behind Julian’s chair. “Before we discuss probate or executive succession, Ms. Sterling left a specific, recorded audiovisual instruction to be presented to this board in the event of her unexpected incapacitation or death.”

Julian let out a harsh, arrogant laugh, folding his arms across his chest. “A video? You think a prerecorded message from a dead woman is going to override state inheritance laws? Play whatever you want, Elena. It doesn't change the legal math. She’s at the bottom of the ocean, and I am standing right here.”

“Let us examine the math, Mr. Vance,” Elena replied softly. She raised the silver remote and pressed the play button.
