Chapter 7 - The Burner Phone Evidence

While Julian was drinking espresso at my desk and plotting the liquidation of my assets, I was sitting up in my private hospital bed at the secure medical bunker thirty miles away. Baby Maya was asleep in a transparent, heated bedside bassinet right next to me, her breathing steady and peaceful. Despite having undergone major abdominal surgery barely five hours earlier, my mind was hyper-focused, fueled by a potent mixture of maternal adrenaline and cold, calculating wrath.
Elena sat at a small folding conference table set up at the foot of my bed, flanked by two senior forensic computer examiners from Sterling Security. Spread out across the table were dozens of printed transaction logs, wire routing diagrams, and high-resolution photographs of text message archives.
“We have completed the full forensic extraction from the cloned backup of Julian’s burner phone,” Elena reported, holding up a thick, red-tabbed binder. “Victoria, what we uncovered goes far beyond a simple murder-for-hire plot. Julian and Chloe Mercer have been systematically embezzling from your secondary real estate holding subsidiaries for the past fourteen months.”
“Show me the methodology,” I commanded, adjusting my hospital pillows so I could sit more upright without pulling my surgical staples.
“Julian utilized his authority as your husband to recommend a boutique property management vendor named Apex Commercial Services for three of your suburban office parks,” Elena explained, pointing to a highlighted flowchart on her tablet screen. “Apex is a dummy corporation registered in Delaware. The sole registered corporate officer is Chloe Mercer. Over the past fourteen months, Julian authorized four point eight million dollars in fraudulent maintenance and consulting invoices paid directly from Sterling accounts into Apex.”
“And where did the money go from Delaware?” I asked, my voice icy.
“Straight into a numbered offshore account in Zurich, Switzerland, held jointly under Julian and Chloe’s names,” Elena said. “He knew that his own investment firm was forty million dollars in the red. He was systematically draining your secondary cash reserves to build a private war chest in Europe. But here is the crown jewel of our evidence, Victoria.”
Elena handed me a printed transcript of text messages exchanged between Julian and Chloe seventy-two hours before the terrace assault. I read the words aloud, my hand tightening around the edges of the paper:
Julian: “The Swiss bank requires a minimum balance of ten million to establish the private wealth shield before we default on the Chicago commercial loans.”Chloe: “We can’t transfer that much without Victoria’s biometric token. Her security alerts will trigger an immediate board audit.”Julian: “She won't be around to trigger an audit. After midnight Sunday, she disappears over the terrace railing. Once I file the statutory death certificate, as her sole surviving husband, I override the biometric protocols and drain the treasury clean before the probate courts even assign an executor.”
“Premeditated murder, wire fraud, identity theft, and federal racketeering,” I whispered, looking down at my sleeping daughter, whose innocent life they had been willing to extinguish for ten million dollars in a Swiss bank. I looked back up at Elena, my eyes burning with an unshakeable resolve. “What time is Julian expecting you at the estate for his emergency financial briefing?”
May you like
“Ten o'clock sharp,” Elena smiled, checking her watch: 8:30 AM. “The senior banking executives from Continental Trust are already en route to the mansion, expecting a somber discussion regarding your estate probate.”
“Contact Marcus and David,” I ordered, swinging my legs carefully over the edge of the hospital bed despite the dull throb in my incision. “Tell them to ready the armored transport and assemble a twelve-man tactical security detail. We are going home.”
